Received word from Ironman02 (good guy, Browns fan used to post on here) that his good buddy Karen Lotz passed away. I guess he has esophageal and stomach cancer. Got pneumonia and tragically passed away just short of 40 years old.

He was on here a lot in the early days and helped me with the vbookie stuff

Was just reading today that 9(?) people have died in Florida the past week due to drowning from unusually strong rip currents.

Sounds like that may have been the case.  If a 35-yr old pro athlete can succumb, not something you want to mess with.

In some cases, the beaches were double-red flagged, meaning closed to swimming and punishable with up to a $500 fine.

That was the word in Destin basically the entire week just after we left

A lot of people don't know what to do if they get caught in a rip current. It is easily manageable if you don't panic and swim with the current you will come out just fine.

Unfortunately most people panic (it just happens), and then fail to swim parallel to the beach until they're out of it.  Always good to have a boogie board or some flotation device with you at the beach in case you have to go out and help someone.

That too, but the worst thing someone can do is to try to swim right back to shore. Guaranteed problem right there.

Panic is real when that water takes over.
