Also the police in Amsterdam knows when big red travels to Massillon and Canton and will write you up for going 1 mph over the limit.

I HATE deer! I have a world-class rose garden, and the %$#@% deer eat my roses. To them my garden is a smorgasbord.

I'm sure War ad knows that Reno won't run up the score on anyone.He is probably just a little upset that people still rip on his RED for the scheduling of so many out of state teams.I reslly don't understand what the big fuss is about.Also don't understand the fuss aboyt the home games.It reminds me of big brother telling on little brother to mom for using a cd or something.Mommy he used my cd without asking.It's so ridiculous.

Coach Rich Pont had Hagg.... run 3 straight plays over Pols...'s tackle slot only to be turned back by Maz....... our all Ohio tackle. One of the best city rivalry games I ever saw. Some great games that year.

That's a terrible analogy! Lol I think it's the 'reason' Big Red fans believe they have to schedule so many out of state teams that anger some people. I mean really, b/c everyone in Ohio is afraid to play them? Really? Let's get serious folks.

Most teams in Ohio are in leagues and have set schedules, therefore it is hard to find mutual open dates. I don't recall anyone saying that everyone is "scared" to play us...except for those teams that have had enough and have dropped us over the years, which is a growing list.

Yes, I remember that game. But it was overshadowed by the game we played the week before. Going into week 9, Big Red was number one in the state and Toledo Catholic Central was number two. TCC had realized they would have a great team so they scheduled us. It turned out to be a good move on their part. Because both teams were undefeated, everyone in the state knew this game was for the state championship. It was a great game but Big Red lost 20-12 and TCC did indeed become state champ.

At the last moment, TCC decided to bring their band. Since it was such a long trip, we Big Red Band members were asked to host the band members overnight. But right after the game, a group of thugs from Big Red attacked the Toledo band. Five kids ended up in the emergency room. I know this for sure because one of them spent the night at my house. He got his front teeth knocked out. My father had to take him to a dentist early the next morning.

The only good news coming out of all this was that the thugs were caught and did go to jail. The five injured band members had to fly back to Steubenville a few weeks later to appear in court. My parents and I got to see them then.

In fact, we tried a new play on 4th down and the backs collided with each other thus turning the ball over on downs. Harry Wils... told my dad they only practiced that play 2 or three times that week.
I met the Toledo Coaching Staff down town while they were waiting for their big tackle to be released from the hospital for torn ligaments and he said they only had to scout Big Red for a few games to know we did not throw the ball that much.. boy how times have changed.
By the way, did you know our coach ( Ray Hoym..) from Big Red that year was on the Massillon team that Big Red beat 66-0? He and Mel Knowlton from Alliance both played on that team.

About a dozen or so years ago, Big Red went 4-6. It was the only losing season Reno has ever had. I assure you that the Big Red fans supported that team as much as we supported the 1984, 2005, and 2006 teams that won the state championship.

If you can't say something intelligent, then don't say anything at all!

I believe they most certainly would be. It would be quieter, but they would still be supporting them.

Neither Hoyman nor Bryan could win the big ones. I still don't understand how Abe Bryan lost to Massillon in 1965. We were ahead at the half. In the second half, Bryan called for a fake punt. If I recall correctly, he put Palmer back there. Palmer had never kicked a ball in his life and everybody on the Massillon side knew it. The fake didn't work, and Massillon took over deep in our territory. They eventually scored and won the game.

Reno has only had one try at Massillon, and his team really shut them down. I wish we had had Reno coaching back in the 1960's. Things would have been very different.

A lot of things have changed over the years. Steubenville did not take hiring coaches too seriuosly back then. When we got certain people on the school board, the program took off.
In the later fifties, B.R. was terrible. They once hired a coach from Hempfield, PA. who had no black players on their team or in the PA. school. Some of our best black athletes quit and transferred out. Big Bill Alford, a super fullback, helped Wintersville to some of their best football ever. Looking back, I remember some of the things that happened at practice that caused the stir-up. He lasted only 2 or 3 seasons.
We went through several coaching changes until Abe came along through the ranks. You mentioned his lack of success against Massillon.
Not too many teams had much success against them. In the game you mentioned, Massillon knew we did not change our snap count and stuffed B.R all night long. Abe believed changing the snap count caused too many procedure calls. We questioned that at the next booster meeting, and he acknowledged that was a mistake.
Also, in reading these posts on these B.R. boards, you would think the booster numbers at the meetings would be huge. About all who attend these meetings are the officers and a few others; that's pathetic.
Booster meetings used to overflow the old cafeteria. I remember once my brother and I split $144.00 on the 50/50 drawing at one of Abe's meetings. I guess many feel that all that matters is pay the dues and support the team with season ticket sales; which, on the bottom line, is a good thing.

I started my website following the 1998 season of 4-6, so I know the suport would still be there.

That ironic thing about that 1962 season is that the only reason Big Red and Toledo Central Catholic played was because Canton McKinley received the Death Penalty that year. If it would have been a normal year, Big Red would have played McKinley, probably had beat them, and would have finished number 1 in the state. We just didn't have much luck back then.

From what the Warren people tell me, that's exactly what happened. A year ago Harding and Big Red signed a two-year, home-and-home contract. The first game was to be played in Steubenville in 2010 and the second in Warren in 2011. Then about three or four months ago, the Warren superintendent decided she didn't want the game, so the contract was broken. Big Red had to scramble to sign the series with Morgantown for week 5.

Warren Harding is playing a very watered-down schedule this year. They dropped Iggy and any other team that might beat them. The only exception is that they do play Massillon.

Well in their defense they joined a new league, so they didn't want to enter a contract where they came to Steubenville and we didn't return the favor.

But if I understand the people from Warren correctly, the two schools already had a contract signed before Harding joined the league, and then they decided to dump us. Our contract should have been grandfathered in even with their league schedule. I'm sure Big Red will not break any contract with any team when we join the ECOL.
