Sman,
If you look, historically, at the AP poll, it has been fairly accurate. While it's a great thing to be able to debate its worth, I doubt that there are many on here who could do better.
I totally agree. Sure, they are never going to be totally accurate, and they will have years like this year where they happened to be a little off. But the polls, for the most part, do a good job of grouping together the teams that are at the upper end of their divisions. If you're expecting anything more than that of it, then maybe you just need to adjust your expectations.
For example, look no further than Texas this year in college basketball, and those voters do see nearly all the teams. They were ranked #1 for a time, and ended up losing more than half of their games in the final fifty percent of their season. And 3 of the top 4 teams in the Final Poll have been knocked out of the tournament. That doesn't mean the voters did a poor job having those teams up there, as they were clearly in the upper echelon (just as Northland, Liberty-Benton, Ottawa-Glandorf, and many others were this year in Ohio). Those teams just happened to not play their best on a given day or were beaten by teams that were better but just started to gel late. Either scenario shouldn't result in any blame falling on the voters.
