Do you have to notify your auto insurance carrier that you will be using your personal vehicle for business purposes?

My 17-year-old nephew started doing this as an evening gig two weeks ago - this evening he missed a stop sign and took the right-side sheet metal off the side of a Lexus. My sister-in-law is frantic - someone mentioned to her that your personal insurance is void if you're using your car for business purposes without notifying the insurance company (and probably paying a higher rate).

He works for a small mom-and-pop operation in Louisville - there's no sort of "company coverage", I'm told.

I never did...but I never had an issues that required the insurance to be involved either..so I might have been 'illegal' as well. But I've never heard of such a thing for delivering pizzas.

I'm calling the insurance company to tell them about this clear cut case of fraud. You make me sick.

I used to use my personal car for business use and had an additional rider on my coverage in case an issue ever came up while I was driving for business.

I like the don't ask don't tell policy in this case. If the Lexus driver doesn't push the issue and let the insurance company pay.

What does that change?? He should want the insurance company to cover you.

He should notify his insurance carrier. Many standard auto policies will cover him for pizza delivery just as long as he informs the company, however non-standard policies (Safe Auto,, A-1 General, etc.) usually have an exclusion for pizza delivery. If there is an exclusion, an endorsement can be added to the policy at a price.

If its not bad, just give the dude a few hundred. I had a guy in a work van a few years ago back out of a bank teller line and into the front of my car. He only did a little bit of damage to the headlight and the lamp and the pain was scratched a bit. He gave me 220 on the spot not to make a report. I think it was about 190 to fix the damage so I made 30.
Tell the kid good luck. 17 delivering pizza, if I was that parent I wouldn't make a big deal about it.

I think taking the sheet metal off the side of a Lexus will be more than a few hundred.

Delivery of goods is usually not covered under a personal policy.

I never told my insurance company when I delivered pizzas back in college.

Of course that doesn't mean that I didn't have to, I was probably "illegal".

I had a "normal" policy though, not Safe Auto or anything "minimum coverage" like that, so I think I was still covered.

Update - damage to the Lexus is estimated at $14K, the family car is totalled (front end of the frame and the front axle/transmission assembly will cost more to fix than the eight-year-old car is worth..

Family has not decided whether or not to bring up the subject of pizza delivery. I'm not sure what I would do here (gonna keep MY mouth shut in this case, though). I suggested they go over the police report before going any further - if there is a reference to it therein, they might as well be honest.

Those damn insurance companies anyway.

I delivered pizzas for a couple of years, and never bothered to tell my agent.....close to 30 years ago. I also got the "good student discount" until I was 25 years old and had been out of college for a couple years. LOL!

In my adult life, I then was an insurance agent for half dozen years. Ironic.

Tell the kid to STFU, and turn it in. A nice gift certificate to a fine steakhouse should keep the lawyer silent.

It seems to me that the Lawyer wouldn't want to bring it up, so he can assure he gets his car fixed. I did laugh though when it went from what sounded like a side swipe in the first post, to totaling one car and causing 14k in damage to another!

With State Farm if you graduate with a Bachelor degree and a 3.0 or higher GPA you kept your good student discount till you were 25. Shit you were a rebel :shy:
