Got a letter in the mail today letting us know that our census form is coming in a week. Really?

Seems like a very good use of over $50 million (when you add in the paper, envelopes, printing, etc). Glad we taxpayers could help foot the bill for this.

I received one as well.

I have no intentions of filling it out.

I got a 2nd notice at my doorstep yesterday.

I wonder if they pumped their fist at the peephole before walking away?

I filled out my census and sent it back, I guess I don't understand not doing it. Now the reminder letter, is a complete waste of money.

Definitely silly not to fill out the census. I just can't fathom how someone thought that sending out a "reminder" letter one week before sending out the actual census was a good use of money.

Someone from the 3 county census bureau (Summitt- Wayne and Stark) came and talked to a group meeting I was at today and this same question was asked. Why waste the money? His answer was statistics show that if you send one of these pre- postcards that the response rate increases 10-20%. Everyone that doesn't respond to the mail census has to be personally contacted. It costs way more to personally contact people because they have to send someone out. He said a 1% increase in response from the cards would make it worth while in saved money. Next week is the week most of the people in our area will get there forms.

Well, it makes as much sense sending that census letter reminding you in 7 days to fill ur census out as this. The US Postal service wants to cut deliveries down to 5 days a week. I have NO problem with a 5 day delivery, nor would most people. How about when the United States Post Master General pullled down a compensation package of 5.5 Million last year?

I had that exact same thought...how many of these millions of letters went immediately into the trash...with all of us saying..."okay, thanks for the heads up". Filling out the census is fine...but the reminder letter makes no sense to me.

I remember they did a similar thing a couple years ago. I received a letter notifying me that I would be receiving my stimulus check in a couple weeks. Our government is so efficient...

I would not be surprised if in the 2020 census they will be sending out reminder letters one week before you get your reminder letter for the census, reminding us that we will be getting our one week reminder letters for the census in a week.

Are you actually? Because otherwise it seems pretty immature.

Between the reminder letters and the b-list celeb television commercials it makes me wonder why this census is soooooo important to the government. I mean I understand the need for a curent and accurate census, but why so much emphasis on this one?

I can't really think of a reason why this census is more important than other censuses in the past but the census in general is very important in terms of funding for projects/programs/non-profits in any given area as well as a state's representation in the House of Representatives and redistricting. It may have something to do with our lagging economy and the jeopardy some organizations might be placed in monetarily if funding is cut due to an incorrect census report.

I thought the same thing when I got the reminder letter, what a waste of tax dollars!

I will fill it out though when I get it.

maybe they felt turnout for the last one was lower than expected. plus its once every 10 years.

Couldn't the same information be collected with tax returns each year?
