You can sell tickets like normal, and it's basically a game-like scrimmage that crowds are encouraged to come watch. You can sell tickets, and the proceeds go to a charity decided upon by the two participating schools.

I believe Carrollton is hosting Perry Thanksgiving weekend in a Foundation game.

No. It's a scrimmage that you can charge for, and the proceeds go to a charity. It's a charity event pretty much, set up as a game-like scrimmge. Some schools even have JV games, I think. I know our school has tried to run it pretty much as a normal game night would go. But it IS a scrimmage.

Ah, OK. Thanks. I've just heard a lot of people talking about them, even talked to a player who didn't know what was up with them.

All accurate descriptions so far.

Oldtimers would see the similarities between these games and the old "previews," only the scrimmages are four quarters long, not two, and usually only two teams are there, rather than six or eight.

Glorified scrimmage for a good cause.

Here's a c&p from the Bucyrus paper about one charitable cause many schools are participating in.

Preseason games a fundraiser for baby

By Denny McPherson • CentralOhio.com • November 19, 2009

MORRAL -- A bevy of north central Ohio schools will reach out on Friday to help a little guy who has yet to see his home.

Funds from boys and girls scrimmage basketball games that night involving North Central Conference members Buckeye Central, Colonel Crawford, Lucas, Crestline, Riverdale and Wynford and Mid Ohio Athletic Conference teams from Northmor, Cardington, Ridgedale, Pleasant, Elgin, and North Union will be donated to help with the medical bills of Lincoln Rossman.

Lincoln is the son of Ridgedale High School athletic director, teacher and assistant basketball coach Greg Rossman and his wife, Lora. She works as the treasurer's assistant at Ridgedale.

The younger Rossman remains in Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus 71¼2 months after his birth on April 5. He was born prematurely and weighed only 1 pound, 8.5 ounces at birth. He has suffered from many maladies, including necrotizing enterocolitis which has destroyed most of his small intestines.

Friday's games are part of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Foundation Games series which provides resources for enhancing educational opportunities and services for Ohio's student-athletes.

Each school in the series donates $250 to the foundation and each can then choose what community-service project it wishes to help with the rest of the money realized from the charity games.

Although Lincoln now weights 13.5 pounds, he is still hospitalized and his medical expenses are already in the $3 million range.

"It's a pleasure for us as a county school to help someone like that," said Pleasant athletic director Kirk Ballinger. "It's the least we can do."

Greg Rossman said the idea to help his family was hatched by a couple friends from Crawford County.

"I've been friends with David Sheldon, who is the athletic director at Colonel Crawford, and his brother Chris Sheldon, the assistant principal at Western Reserve, for a long time and they got together on this," Rossman said. "They wanted to do something for us, and Dave called Bob Britton (Ridgedale's superintendent) and they spearheaded this."

With the exception of Medicaid, which he is eligible for since he is institutionalized, Lincoln Rossman is uninsured. When Ridgedale switched insurance recently, no company was willing to pick up the school system without a waiver on Lincoln since his medical bills were so high.

"He's had two major surgeries and just about every major premature-birth issue," Greg Rossman said.
