Are you sure about that?sherm03 wrote:Exactly. The name ends regardless because our kids will have my last name.dwccrew wrote: Doesn't the family name end with her regardless? The children bore out of this union will have your last name, correct? Also, I know many women that want their children to have the same last name as them.
Unless the plan would be to give them the hyphenated name as well.

I think it just has to do with tradition.Fab4Runner wrote: I would never nót change my name but I also don't have a problem with women who do. Not sure why this would be such a huge issue with some men. And that's a serious question.

You could always change your last name to hers...that's still a complete union, lol. I actually do know a man who did this and yes he gets made fun of.

It would be a huge issue...but I don't think I'd be for it. We never had to worry about it considering my last name is the 5th time my wifes changed her name anyways. Lol

You could always take her last name or you could also agree to give your children her last name. There are many ways to keep the options open with regards to the names of your children.

Let's be honest here, if she's putting out, does it really matter?

as I said earlier, just combine the names in the name of your progeny...
i.e., let's say your girl's last name is Michelin, and your last name is Firestone...just name that first-born son Michelin Firestone.
See, everybody is happy.

Just do what my dad did. His maternal grandfather was lamenting the end of the line for the last name, so he offered to change his and my mom's last name for a rather princely sum.
You're working in porn?sej wrote: If I continue in my line of work, I will keep my last name professionally without hyphenation. Legally, however, I would likely change my name.

I see no problem with using both maiden and married last names.
Especially if she has made a name for herself with her maiden name (in something like academia, or her job field, or whatever else), how can you stop her?

No one likes my idea of both getting a completely new last name? Is that not the true joining of people into a couple?

Or she could just keep her maiden name as a second middle name if she doesn't want to drop her middle name. Just have a four word name.dwccrew wrote: Many women I know change their middle name to their maiden name. That way it is still apart of their name, but there is no hyphenation.

As long as she brings me sandwiches and spreads the legs when I snap my fingers (or preferably both when I snap my fingers...a sandwich is a good treat after I take what's mine), she can call herself whatever she wants.
I'm the picture of class and maturity when it comes to dealing with the female mind.

I would say that "Gblock" has it right. Men and women aren't each other's possessions, they are each other's partners.

I sure hope that you didn't react exactly how your post is worded when she was hinting at hyphenating her name.
I don't mean to sound harsh, but, she would be smart to think twice about the actual marriage if that is how you said it.
I understand this is the Freehuddle and guys say things tougher than they might say them in person, but, if you are going into the marriage thinking that you can control her, don't get married.
Let her be her. I assume that you want to marry her because of who she is, so, let her keep being who she is. If not, your marriage could be doomed from the beginning.

No way would I ever consider changing my name if I got married again. Then again, I won't ever get married again, so its really a non issue. I think its ridiculous that men think they have some devine right for a woman to change her name. What are you giving of yourself that's of equal value as half of who you identify yourself as? If you need a piece of paper, or for a woman to change her name to solidify your relationship, or for her to 'prove' her love for you, or for you to feel secure with her, you already have a fatal flaw.
