Just a year ago I vowed to lose weight, I was 302 lbs at the time. I worked out for 6 days a week watching what I ate, and in 9 months time I lost 3 lbs. I went to the doctor for a yearly checkup and explained to him my problem. He had some tests ran and bloodwork. Then he sent me to an edocronologists, and they found that my thyroid was working properly! Now medicated, 2 months later I have lost 13 lbs and my metabolism is jump started again. So, it isnt as uncommon as some of you think!

most people come up with a way to neglect the gym instead of just working out or attempting to become healthier...

If most foods at the grocery store weren't garbage, it'd be alot easier for some people to eat right. People need to shop at natural food stores.

Thyroid problems probably don't account for more than 5% of the general population overweight.
There's a great deal more than simple thyroid problems. Heck, pretty much any hormonal or chemical imbalance can cause severe metabolic problems.

It's known that a great deal of obese people suffer from reduced sympathetic activity, specifically as it relates to epinephrine and norepinephrine. What's not known is whether the problem is already there and causes the metabolic problem that begins the wheels turning for obesity or whether it's something that is triggered after being a few pounds overweight and then builds into an avalanche.

Generally speaking, I think the old adage "you are what you eat", rings pretty true. There are medical conditions that can effect weight gain but by and large, what you eat is solely your decision and whether you exercise at all is also solely your choice. I know I can lose weight and I know what I have to do to achieve weight loss. It all comes down to whether I have the discipline to follow through or not. I've been doing fairly well over the last year or two with at least maintaining and occasionally going on some periods of gradual weight loss. I also know that I could lose more and probably should stay on a more restricted dietary regimen.

I just love when I hear some of my girl friends who are overweight, tell me how they are trying to lose weight and wish they could, and what's the next thing they do? They go grab a bag a chips and dip and sit and watch tv.... with a diet pop.

Really?!?! You want to lose weight? surprised me...

For most people it is choice. For some, they are just genetically bigger. Maybe not fat, but bigger .

Being fat is not a diesease. That is like saying alcoholism is a diesease.. That is BS . it's an addiction not a disease. Losing weight is tougher for some then others. But if you eat healthy, keep the calories in check, and do plenty of cardio you can still lose plenty of weight.
