I have to go with Dale. Petty is a close second. JJ someday could very well become #1. Four in a row is very impressive, and he's still relatively young.

That doesn't necessarily mean the competition is better. I'm not arguing one way or the other, I'm not taking a stance so I don't really understand why you're pushing this?

Actually..going by numbers..Johnson already is number 1. I mean..he's won the championship in 50% of the seasons he's been in racing!

now you compare that to Gordon

Gordon still needs 20 more races before he's raced in even HALF as many races as Petty. How are you going to reach a good assessment of the drivers based on that when one driver has twice as many races under his belt than the other? If you want to go by numbers...it's hands down Richard Petty. Nobody has come close to having the numbers he has.
Yes it's hard to compare era's.
I don't believe Gordon is #1
That is why I put Percentages on each drivers stats.
So since Petty run so many races this makes him #1? He may have run more than anyone ever has. To me this just proves he had money to back him.

He ran his entire career against Petty. Never raced a complete season(came close like 3 times Years he won title) in 27 years. Can you imagine if he would have been able to run the entire season for that time period. IMO he would have taken a couple of those titles away from Petty.

When you run in twice as many races..and are still able to maintain the same percentage numbers as the others being talked about..then I'd say yes..that is definitely something to take into consideration.Darkon wrote: So since Petty run so many races this makes him #1?

Pearson with 33 wins to Petty’s 30.
Petty beat Pearson in those races 289 to 261.
Petty had 291 top fives to Pearson at 289.
By those numbers you would give the edge to Petty.
But I would like to point out that Petty had the sponsorship and money that would give him better equipment.
So is he really better?
