According to my sources in the triangle, coach k has offered a JUCO player. If the player signs, it will be the 1st time in his 30 years at duke that coach k has signed a JUCO player.

The players name is Carrick Felix and he is currently a redshirt freshman at the College of Southern Idaho.

I guess the transfer of Olek Czyz changed the illustrious coach's recruiting strategy.

Im a pretty big fan of the Juco signings when the player can actually play. The dont really take scholarships away, and for the most part the player has an immediate impact. Either 10 minutes a game to starting.

Dont worry Prescott Duke isnt going to turn into UNLV.
You have a problem with UNLV and or Lon Kruger??

If this kid signs , it just proves what I have been saying for the past couple of years.

Look at Kentucky, they have a JUCO player starting for them in his first year. Darnell Dodson. Sometimes it works out.

There is nothing wrong with JUCO. The point is that Coach K had never before gone down the JUCO recruiting trail and some of the duke fans thought that was one thing that made them special.

I don't remember any Duke fans saying, "We're special because we don't go juco."

You can't just make things up.

Also, Felix hasn't been to Durham for any type of visit, nor have any of the Duke coaches mentioned much about this recently. This is old news, however. I like that you found it necessary to find the time to search Duke's Rival.com "recruit" section to find this news from early January. That is one thing that does make me feel special. I guess Duke still matters:)

IMO, Felix will probably sign with Duke. That's the word "outside the program" anyway. Since we have that open scholly available for next year, and if there is no one else we're going to get, I'll take him if he can play. Why not.

Of course you don't. Taking JUCOS was NEVER the duke way.

I don't get the big deal.
The Big Deal is that Coach k is changing with the times. First, he really goes after a one and done kid , John Wall, and now he offers a JUCO. It is a good thing for duke.

I like how you capitalized "Big Deal" in contrast of your lowercase Coach "k" in order to drive home your Duke obsession.

I love it every time I see it. You might as well capitalize DUKE and highlight each letter green.

I know. Everytime I do it, you get all riled up.It is quite amusing.

You should do the same and see how riled up the OSU fans get.

I'm actually a big fan of JUCO's, especially those who are going to have 3 years of eligibility like this guy. It's the same with Dodson at Kentucky, and he's going to have a very good career. Getting that 3 years from a player is a perfect compromise as you get an extra year and you don't have to suffer through the Freshman woes.

If a JUCO player can play and make an impact, it's absolutely a good idea to bring them in. To say Duke signing a JUCO is proof their recruiting is slipping is ridiculous. The big question with JUCO's is they are hit and miss. If they can't come in and contribute, the lack of that extra first year can actually make development a bit tougher.

Bobby Maze, Tennessee
Darrington Hobson, New Mexico
Aubrey Coleman, Houston
Darnell Dodson, Kentucky
Jermaine Dixon, Pittsburgh
Roderick Flemings, Hawaii

Have been some good JUCO's the last few years.

Who made this claim??? Not me. I din't even hint at such a notion.

What I think is happening is that duke's coach thinks that next year will be the dukies year and he is trying to fit in some missing pieces.

I guess I looked more into your post. I still don't think looking at a JUCO with 3-years of eligibility is necessarily a desperation move for next year. It's a bigger risk (generally) than a HS player, but there is also the chance that the guy can make an impact, stay 3 years and have a quality career and you get to skip the whole "breaking in a Freshman" period.

It isn't desperation. It is looking at next year's roster and seeing what kind of player could possibly put your team over the top.

I understand that this kid is an exceptional athlete with a good wing span. Maybe, the coaching staff feels that they need a wing defender with some length. I am not an expert on duke's roster, but I don't know if this type of athlete is currently on the roster.

You were right the first time, Az. He was hoping either the non-Duke fans on this board, or maybe some of the Carolina contingency, would start the "Coach K has lost his recruiting touch" rhetoric. The demeaning intent of his usage of "illustrious coach" in a thread about Duke recruiting a JUCO is obvious.

No, he wasn't. duke will always have good recruits. Anybody who claims otherwise is just being biased and blind.

You don't think Coach k is an illustrious coach? I sure do.

Most (not all) JUCO's end up there because they couldn't qualify academically out of high school. Felix evidently fits into this category according to a couple of Duke sites. Duke is such a good academic school that you have to be an above average student to cut the mustard. So it is no accident that K would not go after JUCO's. But after offering Eric Bledsoe (14 ACT the first time he took it) and John Wall (didn't qualify until late March his 5th year in HS) last year, I guess nobody should be surprised that K is now going this route.

Don't kid yourself. Coach K can get almost any player admitted if he really wants the kid. This is not a knock on Dockery. As far as I know he took care of his business while at duke.

Yesterday 6'2 Sean Dockery from Chicago (Julian) IL didn't surprise anybody when he made it official for Duke at his evening press conference. However, a lot of Duke fans must be surprised by the fact that Dockery's academic situation is still very much in doubt, as his lastest SAT score was a 15 and his current grade point average in core classes is only a 2.3 (he needs a 17 on the ACT and a 2.5 gpa to be eligible). Apparently a lot of Duke fans have been giving Roy and Harv Schmidt of the Illinois Prep Bulls-eye Report a hard time, because they didn't tell 'em what they wanted to hear. Well, it looks like the Schmidt's are right on the money with this one. Sure, Dockery has a chance to make it, but it may take a while (like maybe next spring). So I encourage the Duke fans to get off the Schmidt's case and, instead, if they want to pick on somebody, try me. I've said about the same thing, but unlike the Schimdt's, I like the controversy. The Dockery commitment is also important, because he becomes the 34th rising senior ranked among our top 100 nationally to have committed prior to the start of the summer camp season, which tip-off this weekend. He also makes it six-for-six in terms of the top point guards already being committed.

I believe he is allowed an exception or two every so often.......its sort of co-signing on a loan for someone. Coach K vouched for him...

But he couldn't bring in a bunch of academic projects....
