Good thing they traded Curtis Granderson to save all that money. That $2 million a year extra vs. Granderson's deal will really come in handy considering Damon is 7-8 years older.

God I hope he goes to Atlanta. Tigers have enough outfielders as is and don't need an aging one in Damon who can't field a lick.

I'm glad we got rid of arguably the best CF in our division. Now we're trying to get old ass Damon?

I would take Damon in ATL if it were for 1 yr, $5 mil. He will platoon at best and there is no reason to pay him anymore than that. I've seen better arms in the LLWS and he won't benefit from playing in Coors Field East like he did last year with the yanks.

I don't know if he's Houdini as much as he must have videotape on every GM he deals with.charliehustle14 wrote: It's official: Boras = Houdini

I loved Jonny Damon when he was in New York.... but the more I think about it, he has to be one of the worst defensive outfielders I've ever seen...

^^ Correct and Detroit is much more spacious and he will look even worse out there.

This is true. Imagine if they used the original fences when the park was built at Comerica.... that could REALLY be a disaster....

It has come down to the White Sox and Detroit for Damon.
I dont think Chicago is really serious, because that 14 million over 2 years from Detroit will be hard to pass up.

Boras continues to ask for a 2 year $20 million deal. Damon reportedly is cooling his heals in Hawaii......Illitch should go vacation in Europe.

If Detroit signs Damon for 7-8 million a season, they are going to have alot of explaining to do to the fan base considering they traded Granderson as a cost cutting move. To turn around and then give a past his prime veteran like Damon almost the same yearly salary after the fact would be a tough pill to swallow to Tigers fans not happy with that trade in the first place.

Iggy, to my knowledge, the Tigers never said that trading Granderson was a cost cutting move. Granderson hit .189 vs. left-handed pitching. I believe that is why he is gone. Not that I particularly want to see Damon in Detroit, but at least he can hit lefthanded pitching and will strikeout half as much as Granderson. The Tigers traded Granderson at probably or near his peak, thus bringing in some really good pitching. I also think that Granderson will be on the bench in NY when the Yankees face a lefty.

A little research and you would find that they did get rid of Granderson to save money because his contract was backloaded. Here is an article:Hammerin'Hank wrote: Iggy, to my knowledge, the Tigers never said that trading Granderson was a cost cutting move. Granderson hit .189 vs. left-handed pitching. Excerpt from the article.
Meanwhile, Granderson is set to make a cheap $5.5 million this year, but signed a five-year, back-loaded contract in 2008 that continues to increase year after year. Granderson will make $8.25 million in 2011, $10 million in 2012 and he has a club option for $13 million or a $2 million buyout in 2013. Right now, Granderson is cheap, but as Dombrowski has experienced this year, back-loaded contracts can come back to bite you in the butt.
Another article.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4725108
From the article.
Granderson was an All-Star who had 30 HR's, 71 RBI's and 20 steals. His avg. has fallen from .302 in 2007, to .280 in 2008 and .249 in 2009. So you are correct that his avg. has gone down, but his fielding is top notch and IMO he is the best CF in the Central division. He can cover alot of ground with his speed.Detroit, which failed to make the playoffs following a late-season slide, may be looking to cut payroll after a big attendance drop this year at Comerica Park. Granderson is owed $5.5 million next year, $8.25 million in 2011 and $10 million in 2012, and his contract includes a $13 million club option for 2013 with a $2 million buyout.

Atlanta reportedly had made a formal offer in the $4-5 million/ 1 year. I'm not sure if the Tigers have actually tendered an offer, but it may well be a case of Boras having the Tigers bidding against themselves.

Story out of Chicago is that it would be a shock to see the White Sox not sign Damon.

I was telling all the Tiger fans at work today that it is obvious he doesn't want to go to Detroit. The offer he got from the Tigers is the best he is going to get and he did not jump on it. Now they are saying the White Sox are the front runner with a 1 yr - $4 million offer.
