Ohio State somewhat unexpectedly added to its 2010 recruiting class today, signing Adam Griffin -- son of OSU legend Archie -- to a letter of intent.

Adam Griffin is a 5-9, 185-pound running back and defensive back from Columbus DeSales High School. He was an all-district pick, but did not appear to be an OSU target before this announcement. Last week, Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said he did not expect to add anyone else (besides possibly Seantrel Henderson) to this class.

Archie's achievements don't need to be repeated for most OSU fans. He is the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner and the school's all-time leading rusher.

“Adam Griffin has a passion to be an Ohio State Buckeye,” Tressel said in a release. “He will add a great deal to our football family on the field, in the locker room and on our campus. Adam clearly understands the privilege of being an Ohio State Buckeye.”

Griffin is the 19th member of the 2010 class.

Two star on rivals. Does not list a schollarship. He could be a surprise at DB or WR in 3 years.

I guess Seantrel Henderson is officially out of the picture?

I personally love the kid. From what I saw of him in some games this year he seemed like a very physical back. May be a bit undersized at 5'9", but he's a smart kid, and, with the obvious connection, knows what it means to be a Buckeye.

He's not on par with most recruits OSU gets, but I like it. Obviously being Archie's son has a lot to do with it, but he'll love every minute of being a Buckeye and will be a good locker room guy. Maybe down the line he works himself into a solid special teams player.

Not every scholarship has to go to a star.

Says they offered a scholly. OSU has 20 to give so Henderson and Anderson not technically out of equation.
Unlike their southern brethren, the Buckeyes typically don’t use their full allotment of schollies when signing a a new class, preferring to hold one or two to reward a walk-on that has put in hard work on the practice field.

In a slight variation to this, Jim Tressel and staff have offered a scholarship to running back Adam Griffin of St. Francis DeSales in Columbus, making him the 19th member of the class. A smallish (5-9/185) running back, Griffin helped lead the Stallions to the 2009 state championship game on the way to earning all-district honors. He’s also a hero in the classroom, earning offers from all three service academies.

Perhaps most importantly, however, Adam is the son of the President and CEO of Ohio State University Alumni Association, or the guy we fondly remember as being the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy.

Tressel on the newest Buckeye:

“Adam Griffin has a passion to be an Ohio State Buckeye,” says Coach Jim Tressel. “He will add a great deal to our football family on the field, in the locker room and on our campus. Adam clearly understands the privilege of being an Ohio State Buckeye.”

Welcome to the club, Adam. Make pops proud.

Plus with as much money as Archie has likely given the football program, he basically prepaid his scholarship.

Don't OSU employees get free tuition for their children? Why didn't we just take him as a walk on?

I'm guessing maybe NCAA bylaws prevent something like that?

^$ isn't the issue its the spot on the roster he takes up. I think he will definately make an impact on at least special teams.

Remember Archie wasn't some top notch kid being high on the DC when he started at OSU.

I like the signing. Who knows, he could turn out to be the next great RB/WR/DB at Ohio State, it's not like Troy Smith was ever regarded as being anything great coming out of high school.

Will they break #45 out for him?

Let's keep it in perspective people. He might pan out to be a contributor, but let's not compare him to his dad or think that it's likely he'll ever even get a look at RB.

I thought Troy Smith was somewhat highly regarded?

Troy Smith was a Top 11 attendee. He was highly regarded as an athlete and a qb.

He was, but everyone was so excited about Zwick that no one paid attention to the Smith early on. I believe Troy was an elite 11 QB.

I'm a buckeye fan but I have little respect for his Daddy (Personal Reasons). So I could care less about the kid, unless he produces at OSU.

Is the Alumni Association acutally a part of the university? If not, I can't see how Adam is entitled to a scholarship as a child of an employee.

I believe that the Alumni Assoc is now a part of the University. I think I read where Archie is now an SVP of Ohio State rather than the President of the Alumni Assoc but is still in charge of the Alunmi Assoc.
