Isn't this always the case? Unless he personally delivered the thank you letter to the prospective employer (and the person who actually conducted the interview), there's always someone unknown in between.
I took a time-sensitive package to the post office Friday at 5pm. Didn't know the lady that took it from me, but I'm glad it got there and the party called me yesterday to complain that they got it! I trusted her to do her job and she did it.
He trusted someone to meter mail and they didn't do it. Shit happens and sometimes it's not good shit.
