I remember the phrase "Hope and Change" frequently being used in 2008 by the Obama campaign, only now to see the President telling Americans what they should or should not do...

Don't go to Vegas

Take away kids's video games

Go Green

Don't watch cable news shows

I was going to post something on this earlier, but this article from politico beat me to it.

Um, i don't see anything wrong with what he is saying.

These are the same types of messages that have been coming out from people in the government forever.

Just saying common sense sorts-of-things in various instances, not like he's promoting a national campaign to take away video games. These types of messages come out of every administration.

As I asked on another thread.....do we need any further proof that our President is a narcissist??

'How's that Hope-y Change-y thing going for 'ya?'

He has folks in positions related to those items and THEY should be talking about this stuff to Americans -- not the president.

Let the Surgeon General talk about getting off the couch, or the Sec. of Energy talk about how to go green.

Obama's role is much higher than that and he should let his appointees do their jobs.

As for his comments about Las Vegas (twice now): he's simply a fucking idiot. Does he not comprehend that the folks in that city MAKE THEIR LIVING OFF TOURISM?

You would have thought he'd have understood the first time he made these same stupid remarks that it wasn't smart to go after people's jobs -- and that's exactly what he's doing.

I want to hear Obama scold Americans who won't give up their cell phones/cable-sattelite TV in order to provide themselves with catostrophic health insurance.

Why would you care what Obama is saying anyways? Do you think he has a clue what he is doing? Any rational person, regardless of political party affiliation, has to know by now that the man is incompetant.

You're treading thin ice seeing as how you aren't even supposed to have privileges to post here. I thought I would be a nice guy as long as you followed the rules. Don't make me regret that decision.

Yeah, not that I give a crap about what anyone in D.C says, but Obama acting like a Presidential Nanny is really annoying. He was elected to "lead" this country, not tell the citizens what to do.

Wait, doesn't "lead" mean to instruct, to direct, to tell?

Or are you saying that while he should be instructing us how to be a better nation and leading us, the tone and articulation of the words is a bit much?

Just trying to clarify.

I say sometimes he does "lecture", but sometimes it is needed and other times it is not. It depends on the situation, context, and the way the tone is of the speech.

His job is to run this country, the federal government, he has no business telling anyone not his kids what to do with their own lives.

He's not leading -- he's talking down to us like we're children.

I don't appreciate it, and I'm guessing there are a few million folks who agree with me.

So, what makes this different than what every other President has ever said to the public? Or has every other President not told people what to do?

Again, I think it is more of a tone problem.

Does a "tone problem" give a real feel for how the speaker feels about what he's speaking about? I feel it does, in which case I'm not pleased with how we're being spoken to. The guy is a politician, and speaking well has gotten him where he is today. So to say it's a "tone problem" ie; something he needs to be better coached on at this point in the game seems to me a bit of a reach. If that is in fact what you are implying ptown.

I am. I think if you would take a look at Presidential speeches throughout history, many focused on what the country should do. Ie. buy this or do not do that, live free, expand here, go there, end this, etc. So, this is noting new to me.

But, the tone, ie, the way in which and the context of what is being said, it what is upsetting people.
Again, to me some of what he says is fine, and others I cringe and say to myself, he shoudl have held that one in (The reference to the Supreme Court ruling in the SOTU)

i remember watching that video you posted a couple weeks ago when he was being asked questions by that group of republicans. it bothered me when they would ask a tough question and he would respond with "Look......". to me he came off sounding like a dick almost not caring what the person was saying and he was just going to do whatever he wanted anyway.

That pretty much sums up how I feel about every President. It doesn't matter what the public thinks/wants. Once they are in office, they'll do what they want.

The contradictions of some statements made by certain posters and their beliefs they have declared on this site (and the last) on this thread are quite humorous. Many people are being hypocritical. Some believe he should not be directly speaking about these things and should have his people assigned to these issues speak, yet complain he has too many "czars".

Or someone brought up the tourism aspect of Vegas because people have jobs; did you vote yes on the casino issue in Ohio? It'll create jobs just like in Vegas. Or is it ok there and not here? I am curious.

Some people are complaining that he should just "lead". I believe that is what he thinks he is doing. Look, I don't care for Obama. I didn't vote for him and I will vote against him in the next election, but I think the same people who supported Bush when he was under attack are now on the offensive as a sort of revenge. They then justify it by saying it needs to be fair and equal, the media is biased, etc. We know. Let's not act like children about it.

The only guy who asked a question worth anything was Congressman Paul Ryan and he had Obama cornered because Obama's "spending freeze" on discretionary spending would include the bump ups in discretionary spending his budget proposes this year and Obama started saying they were required mandatory spending increases and then the Congressman had to correct the president again.

Everyone else's question was worthless.

Congressman Ryan is one of the best guys the Republican's have going for them.

I haven't really been following this story at all, but this strikes me as a non-issue. The President tells people not to waste money and to get their kids up and playing, and this apparently pisses people off?

C'mon, guys. From 2000-2008, I was annoyed at the lefties who hated everything Bush did, even if it was fairly innocuous. It annoyed me that they looked to get upset over every little issue. I was hoping that people on the right would be better . . . but c'mon! This is petty.
