Armando Allen had surgery today on one of his hips in Nashville. Calabrese will stay at ND this weekend for treatment on his hammy and will return to practice Monday.

Spin it all you want...it was still dumb. At the VERY worst, get closer for an easier FG. To throw into the endzone, with all that has already been mentioned, was not very smart. If Tress did it, I would say the same. Snapper? Who cares..its not like there wasn't someone else on the team who hadn't done or practiced that. And Kelly never mentioned that as being the issue. If that was the reason, I think he would have said as much.

Yes, Notre Dame wore stickers on their helmets last Saturday with the DS in a shamrock in honor of Declan.

Kelly has said it since then that if the situation arises again and he has to make a call, he will make the same call. You can debate it all you want but its his call to make and he felt that if it was executed properly, it gave his team the best chance to win. sjm also made good points about having the kick into a 30 MPH wind with a new snapper (yes, it does make a difference) and the fact that an extra point had already been blocked in the game.

I can accept Kelly's reasoning but he has arguably the best kicker in CFB. I would have rather he put it on the kickers leg in that instance but I can understand the call, especially when Mike Floyd is matched up one on one.

Well I think that's an unfair comparison, because it wasn't fourth down. Yes, I would probably still have run the ball. But think basically is just for all of those "worst call of the year" people, including many journalists. In my opinion, it wasn't. Trust me, I was screaming after the interception, I though it was some NCAA11 type call. But I have reevaluated the thought process and I can't say it was idiotic anymore. Kelly is a gambler, and his track record shows that he wins the vast majority of the time.

Yes. I believe Tulsa's AD is a Notre Dame alum which is how the game was scheduled to begin with.

Back up QB vs. a back up snapper. I think over 90% of college coaches would risk trying to win the game with a back up snapper.

Your right, he has been like that...that is, when he had the players able to mkle the plays. When you have a frosh in the game, with limited experience...you don't make a stupid decision like that. Some of you ND nutheads can't even admit the obvious. I have heard a ton of people on the radio as well as TV this week..not one supported that call. All were unbias and many had played/coached the game. Admit the obvious, it was a POOR call, period. Hell, I have ripped Tress for poor play calling (inside 5 at Wisky!). Supporting your team/coach is one thing...but doing it to the point of looking stupid is another thing.
I happen to think Kelly is a fine coach. I think it was a good hire for ND. BUT, even good/great coaches make poor decisions at times. Kelly hasn't exactly been stellar this season from a coaching standpoint. But hell, I think Urban Meyer is making very quesitonable decisions this year as well. Tressel has had his obvious moments in the past as well. It happens. Admit the obvious.

If it was a chip shot field goal from the 10 yard line then yeah I'd have a real problem with it. With all of the factors going against it being a certain make I don't have an issue with the play call. Kelly is aggressive and always has been. The thing that would piss me off is if he is conservative like he was at the end of the Michigan State game. Tied with about a minute to go, the ball at his 30 yard line and 2 time outs? Yeah, he should have been more aggressive there. Not every coach believes the punt is the most important play in football.

I don't think it was the best call to make in that situation but some of the reasoning makes a little sense of it.

All I know is that while I'm not thrilled with this season and losses to teams that I think ND typically should beat.....it's just too early to give up on Kelly. If there is little-to-no improvement next year and they're losing games they shouldn't and in similar fashion two years from now.....then I'll give up on him. The last 2 coaches started out great and turned out to be the wrong guy(s) for the job. Hopefully it's the reverse this time around.

Injuries, while an excuse, have been plentiful and devastating. ND doesn't have the depth to withstand those losses. Maybe several elite schools could somewhat weather similar injuries to starters but ND isn't elite. Let's hope for a healthy and improved Irish squad in 2011.

Surprisingly, there's been some decent discussion/debate going on here. Kudos to those engaging in it.

To go along with your point about injuries and a healthy 2011, Kelly said in his press conference yesterday that the off season conditioning program will be looked at to see if there is anything different that can be done to prevent injuries. I'm not really sure what they can change, as the program has been successful at every other stop he's made with the same strength and conditioning coach. Hopefully it just takes more time in the system to get their bodies adjusted because of the differences between what they did last off season compared to Weis' program.

It was the worst call of the year, and one of the worst calls I've seen in college football. The Kelly apologists can keep apologizing, there was NO need to pass the ball in that situation. When one thinks of all the bad things that can happen, (holding penalty, bad snap, QB trips up, sack, fumble, INT - which DID happen), Kelly's call wasn't just stupid, it was epically stupid.

The only reason why journalists aren't being harder on him is because ND is irrelevant this year.

If a coach for Alabama, Ohio St., Boise St., TCU, LSU, Oregon, etc...made an equally boneheaded call, I can't imagine an ND fan not recognizing it.

You must not watch much college football then. If they play had worked or at least not resulted in an interception, you wouldn't be saying its an epically bad call. Bottom line is, Kelly called the play, it didn't work out. He played it they way he has always done and he has had a pretty good success rate in the past. Again, the 37 yard field goal or whatever it would have been was not a chip shot guaranteed make due to a number of factors.

I've followed college football religiously for damn near 20 years. I'd easily put it in the top 5 of worst calls I've ever seen.

I don't really care, I'm not a ND fan, I just don't understand you guys.....no fan of any other team is even trying to defend the call, yet you guys are trying to. It isn't working. It was a dumb call. Period.
