After college I contracted services for Bell Atlantic and my work took me through this area once. This underground coal fire is still burning with no end in site. It's a pretty remarkable story.

saw that on the history channel a while ago. pretty strange event. i understand people not wanting to move, but i think for them to deny the fire exists is pretty stupid.

It doesn't take much to determine there's a fire burning there. Simply look down and watch the smoke rising from the ground all around you.

I saw this place on the show "Life After People" one night. Pretty amazing to see the old photos where the town was at its peak, and then contrast that with the deserted ghost town it is now. The thing that amazed me were the people that stayed despite the streets breaking and cracking like crazy.

I sure as hell would have had no problem getting out.

that and knowing there might be toxic gas seeping into the house and you might not wake up the next morning. you wouldnt have to tell me twice.

Amen. I think the biggest wait was based on how to get out of their house without just losing it...at least I hope that was the case.

When the Feds agreed to start buying property from the people they should have ran right then and there.
