Cavaliers may not wait until deadline to make a trade decision: Cavaliers Insider
By Brian Windhorst, The Plain Dealer
February 02, 2010, 7:15PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Technically the NBA's trade deadline is February 18th at 3 p.m., which means there's 15 shopping days left.

But for the Cavaliers, who are one of the more active teams examining the market, that may not turn out to be the case. According to various league sources, the Cavs may compress their time schedule and make a decision on whether or not to make a trade by the start of next week's All-Star break.

As it is, the vibe the team has been giving in talks lately is that they are willing to make a deal, but do not feel it is necessary. Over the last two months, the front office has been in talks with various teams about good shooting forwards and good shooting guards with defensive skills.

With Mo Williams, Delonte West and Leon Powe all scheduled to return from injuries right at or shortly after the All-Star break, there's a feeling the Cavs want to make a move sooner rather than later to limit the turbulence to the roster with so many players coming back and roles changing.

The Cavs are usually quite conscious of team chemistry and consider it before making any move.

Part of the thinking may be the demanding schedule that comes after the current seven-game homestand. After getting a week off for All-Star festivities, the Cavs will play six games in nine days and all are against potential playoff teams. They will host the Denver Nuggets and New Orleans Hornets and play at Charlotte, Orlando, Boston and Toronto.

Parker holding out hope: Anthony Parker hoped to hear from his agent with a final answer on the Three-Point Shootout Tuesday, but the call didn't come before the Cavs faced the Grizzlies. While Daniel Gibson, who started the week ranked first in the league in 3-point shooting, didn't think an invite was coming, the fifth-ranked Parker was holding out hope. The announcement on the participants is expected to be made Wednesday.

There have been reports that Channing Frye of the Suns and Danilo Gallinari of the Knicks have been invited. According to a source, the Suns' Steve Nash and the Celtics' Paul Pierce were given invites. But the field may not totally be set yet as Pierce suffered a foot injury Monday that may affect his status.

Jackson re-signs: With West still day-to-day with a fractured left ring finger, Cedric Jackson was signed to a second 10-day contract on Tuesday. Jackson hasn't gotten much playing time and hasn't even been able to show much in practice because the Cavs haven't had a full contact practice in the last 10 days. But the front office still seems intrigued with the former Cleveland State star.

"Danny [Ferry] likes him and likes what he saw when he played in the NBDL," coach Mike Brown said. "That has a lot to do with it."

Williams hurting: Jawad Williams has been battling a bout with back spasms over the last few days. He first felt them on Saturday night but played Sunday, scoring 12 points against the Clippers. Williams got treatment both Monday and Tuesday and is attempting to play through it, just as he's doing with a left thumb strain.

"You just rely on adrenaline to get through it," Williams said. "But after the game, I was feeling it."

Dribbles: Lakers center Andrew Bynum said he needed to get a root canal to repair damage to a tooth after taking an elbow from Shaquille O'Neal. ... Rob Kurz, who was cut from the Cavs in training camp, was named to the D-League All-Star roster. So was former Cav Dwayne Jones.

• It’s been well documented that the Cavaliers’ infatuation with Antawn Jamison has been rekindled. What’s been underplayed is the reason behind it: LeBron James is the one driving the team’s pursuit of Jamison, according to a source, and Cavs GM Danny Ferry – as usual – is trying to appease the King. A couple of problems: The Wizards want a young asset in return, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas – while a fit salary-wise – doesn’t fit that description. The sensible piece to include in the deal would be J.J. Hickson, whom the Cavs are reluctant to give up. But if the Cavs got Jamison, what value would Hickson be to them as their fifth big man? One scenario that is believed to be under discussion would have the Cavs hoping the Wizards bought out Ilgauskas after the trade, using some cash added to the deal by Cleveland. That way, the Cavs could sign Ilgauskas back on a minimum deal, giving them the player James covets (Jamison) and a 7-foot-4 insurance policy for Shaquille O’Neal. The Wizards would have to ask themselves if getting out from under Jamison’s contract and adding Hickson is enough to justify a deal that would get them under the tax next summer, but not under the cap.

No, he wants them to get Jamison which will make the Cavaliers any better. He was vocal in the Shaq trade (how is that one turning out) and no one thought he was selling out Sasha or Ben.

Nice try though, LeBron has a great relationship with JJ.

Good luck trying to talk sense with Cavs fans. They will spin anything Kobe does or wants into being a bad thing and spin anything Lebron does or wants into a good thing.

Keep trying to compare LeBron to Kobe's situation lol.

Where did LeBron throw his teammates under the bus at all? He is simply pushing for Jamison (supposedly, not confirmed like Kobe).

I like Jamison but I think we can win it all either way. I guess one needs to look beyond 2010 though too. I just don't think taking a chance of not being able to get Z back is a risk you want to take. JJ we can do with out. He is getting better but he can be replaced.

If it truly comes down to it Cleveland could get Jamison without giving up JJ and still getting Z back via buyout.

LeBron hasn't come out and said we needed to make a trade and this report hasn't even been confirmed (like the Kobe reports had been).

Well, if they get Jamison, they better win it all. That contract is a killer.

I don't think they can afford to stand pat, especially if other contenders make some moves. Not saying they should blow the team up at all though, if they can get a valuable piece for the right price... do it. Just don't wait until after the season is over this time *cough Shaq*

Yeah, his contract isn't terrible.

Plus, Cleveland won't have any room to sign a guy comparable to Jamison in the offseason. They will have the MLE to work with but getting Jamison (who hasn't had any signs of slowing down) will not only help this season but also next year.

If they traded Z to the Wiz there wouldn't be any problems... Z makes $11 mill too.

Business is handling behind closed doors. Did you know that LeBron and the other top Cavs okay'ed the Jackson for West trade that fell threw earlier this year? LeBron isn't throwing guys under the bus and being an asshole about it. But he also isn't a fucking idiot to see getting Jamison at a low price will help the team.

And until its confirmed via Windy or if LeBron somehow came out in public (wouldn't do that, has more class than that) then its a moot point to argue.

That what is about right there so it shouldn't matter how kobe handled the situation because he and the lakers organization got what they wanted a championship caliber team.

Jamisons contract handicaps you in the future. That is why it is championship or bust with this kind of trade.

Exactly, and I don't even know why you are trying to compare Kobe and LeBron in this instance.

Until LeBron comes out in a video saying that "the Cavs should ship out JJ" while cussing up a storm this is a pointless argument. I am not trying to bash Kobe, but when you want to ask how this differs from LeBron come on lol.

I think it is 2 more guaranteed years after this one, with a hefty escalation each year. Reghi was saying that is a bit of a nasty contract to take on.

For the record, I want to see Jamison here. I would take one championship and then falling back to mediocrity any day.

hes almost a guaranteed 20/10 guy, I would like this trade because he is one of my favorite Carolina players and I would get to see him play more
