I realize Palm dropped the ball but the tech community is picking the slack up until palms updates these issues. I've done reading and it's easy once you know where to find the info....

SMS Tone for contact: http://forums.precentral.net/webos-patches/206906-autopatch-sms-tone-per-contact.html
You can load any MP3 but head this warning(dont want a whole MP3 playing the entire song): after the patch is installed, you can go into the Sounds and Alerts app, and define ringtones for alerts, notifications, and messages. These will play for their entire length so pick an mp3 or wav file that is meant to be for a notification.
So, just make sure whatever MP3, tone or music you play, that it's only as long as you want to listen to it when alerted....

I have the Pre, my gf has the Hero. Can't go wrong with either phone, both are great at what they do, but I feel with the keyboard and for multiple apps open at once, the Pre is the way to go. But you'll be getting a great phone with either of those two.LTrain23 wrote: I'm deciding between this and the HTC Hero as my next phone.

The easiest way I've found to fix this is download something like "Tonethis" to your computer. You can take any song you have saved on your computer, cut out the section of the song you want to use as a ringtone, and save it to your itunes. From there, just as you said, it's just a shorter version of a song, which you can set as your ringtones. I have like 30 different ringtones all made this way, and didn't cost me a dime, and better yet, you can use ANY song you want if you have it on your computer, you can make it into a ringtone.imex99 wrote: SMS Tone for contact: http://forums.precentral.net/webos-patches/206906-autopatch-sms-tone-per-contact.html

Yeah, I'm thinking the Pre is going to be my next phone. I currently have the Instinct, and while I love touch screen, I severely miss an actual keypad while texting.Red_Skin_Pride wrote:I have the Pre, my gf has the Hero. There have been about ~1000 times I could have thrown my phone on the ground and stomped it because of text lag or hitting the wrong buttons...

Hero's touch recognition is AMAZING. I think you'll find it's about 10x's better than the instinct. But the Pre was a 650 dollar phone 5 months ago when I got it, so if you can get your hands on it for what? 80 bucks now? I'd go for it. With the new updates, it's really becoming what it should have been from the beginning.LTrain23 wrote:Yeah, I'm thinking the Pre is going to be my next phone. Yeah, Best Buy is offering the Pre for 79.99 with my upgrade I believe...
The HTC Hero is 179.99
BTW, how are the apps for the Pre? That's the only thing keeping me on the fence between the Pre and Hero..

Itunes: If you have updated Itunes to the latest version, it won't work anymore.... If you didnt update Itunes, your good to go. I'm not sure if Palm is going to be breaking itunes for the Pre anymore!!!! I never use it aynways.

I had a Treo that was love or hate. Some things were incredible on it and some things were just horrible. I looked into the Pre but decided to go with the Droid. If Palm could take all the things that were great in my Treo and get rid of all the bad things they would have a great phone and it sounds like they are close from what I'm reading here. So far I am loving my Droid, though.

It sounds like the Pre is suffering from the same thing that the Instinct suffered from...
All the promise in the world, but not much delivered.
The HTC Hero looks amazing though, and with Android 2.0, it has a TON of apps..
That may be my next phone.. I think I've ruled out the Pre. I've been fooled once.

I tried the Hero but like the Pre more. The Pre hs it draw backs but 1000 times better than the instinct....I messed with instinct hd and realized had bad that OS is. The Pre has its faults but I've overcome them with patches and beta software. I'm testing some app and software for developers right now.LTrain23 wrote: It sounds like the Pre is suffering from the same thing that the Instinct suffered from...

I'm flop flopping pretty bad, so I'm waiting until after Christmas to make my decision..
The Pre looks like a nice phone, undoubtedly better than the Instinct, and it's 99.99 compared to 179.99 for the Hero...
I also like the potential of the Web OS, but we'll see..

There are some exciting things coming or the Pre, a better SDK(better/easier for devs to make quality apps), Full adobe flash player: http://techfragments.com/1093/adobe-flash-player-10-1-air-2-beta-release
The app catalog is churning apps out at a good pace and will only get better.
They've been doing firmware updates every month or so...So, Palm is firmly behind the Pre and webOs. There next webos phone should blow things out the water...

I heard that there is a pre app that you can beam your internet to your computer. I have one for my HTC Touch Pro that I use my wifi on my phone to my computer. I'm thinking about getting the Pre, haven't decided yet but I will only get a phone where I can use it's internet on my computer without paying the fee sprint charges.

yes, there are a few options. You can download the free tether app that allows you to hook up pre to laptop via usb. There is a hack/code that will enable the free tether able to use wi-fi to tether your Pre to laptop.
The 2nd option is 2 donate(pay) mytether app dev. and he will give u code to download app and you can tether via usb or wifi. So, you have a few options....

why does att have sim cards and sprint does not? it made switching phones ultra easy. is it a different technology or just sprints way of controlling the used cell phone market. just wondering, im looking to unload my pre and switch phones.
