SEcond round? Last I checked, when OSU made the NCAA finals, they were about 7 deep. Of course that was "different", right?
Minutes are overrated. OSU made Big Ten Finals last year doing the same. Again, these are young guys, they have at least 2 days between games. There is a timeout every 4/5 min with TV. OSU doesn't press.
OSU bench is just BAD. It is what it is.

Thats a false statement. And maybe I support coaches because I have been around the game twice as long as you have, as well as up close and personal. I also realize I am not there(OSU practice) every single day...and don't know whats going on at practice or even what maybe going on off the court. This team is probably a sweet 16 at best. With luck, maybe elite 8. Thats the extent of it, and it is what it is.

As for title game...OSU was simply beaten by a better team. Oden wasn't in that much foul trouble that game. He was the one player who kept them within reach and he single handidly almost fouled out 3 Fla players. He played 38 min!!

OSU won by 20+...I'd say Matta had his team ready to go! Subs? Who knows. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. I haven't been to practice nor know whats going on within the program. Thus, I wont' speculate.

Your loyalty to the Bucks is awesome and you are a true fan. I applaud you for that. I'm just saying that I think this team will benefit more from having some fresh legs out there. Granted things are working great now, but the season is long and legs will fatigue more as the season wears on, especially once conference championships roll around. You are right, Oden played 38 minutes in the national championship, but had 4 fouls and played much of the game in foul trouble, which limited his effectiveness and aggressiveness on the defensive side of the ball. Not to mention, the Buckeyes' top 3 guards each played much of the game with 3 fouls. Foul trouble and depth hurt them in the past and will hurt them again this year if they don't get more guys involved. This team has some of the best talent in their starting 5 in the country, but I would just like to see some other guys get involved to keep the studs healthy and rested.

We can agree to disagree. Yes, there are certain games, matchups when Matta can use his bench, and he does. There are games, then there are games when there is not good matchups. I also believe going to the bench, there is a HUGE drop off. You work VERY hard to get a lead...sub comes in, its gone. It was for not. I'd rather stick with starters. Tired starters are still better then the subs IMO. Again, IF you have a bench..I agree, use it. Fact is, OSU bench is just not that good...nor was it with that Oden team. You go with what you got.

No reason this team can't make a run in March....There's always plenty of surprises every year in the tournament. With the talent on this OSU team, there's no reason they can't be a surprise and make a run. If you don't think this team would benefit from getting a few more bodies involved, you are apparently ignorant to the important facts of basketball.

I totally agree that you have to go with what you've got, but you mean to tell me that a 25+ lead today wasn't a safe enough situation to get some other guys involved and prove they can contribute?

Lets be realistic here now. This is a fine OSU team. As I said, their strength is shooting the ball. If they are on, they could beat a lot of teams. But to be on as OSU was today, for 6 games...isn't going to happen. OSU has NO post play. And if matched up with a big strong athletic front line...that some of the better teams have, they are in deep trouble. There margin of error is very slim. As I said, at best this is a top 15 team. Probably more between 15-20. Anything could happen come NCAA time...but I don't expect this team to make it to final 4. Sweet 16 is realistic.

I'm just looking at things realistically. I said earlier when they were up 27 they should get some bench minutes. Though I'm not averse to running it up against Minnesota, ever, (see Minnesota mug OSU thread for reasons).

It's unlikely the Bucks could run off 5/6 games shooting 65/70%, which with our center play would be required. Just looking at it realistically.

Ohio State was about 9 deep when they made their run to the final. All 9 of the players averaged double digits in minutes with 8 playing no less than 16 minutes per game.

Ohio State’s bench was much better back then as it is now though. No disrespect towards the team, but anytime their bench players are two juco transfers and Kyle Madsen, maybe it’s better to play the starters’ long minutes. However, every team is only an injury away from having to have someone step in to fill the void. So it’s important that somehow or someway that Matta develop the players the best he can, especially in a meaningless blowout game. So I’m all for the starters playing extended minutes, but when it’s a blowout, get the bench guys in there for important experience.

^^I totally agree that they can't shoot like that for 5 or 6 games in a row, but this team doesn't need to shoot like this the first 2 games. They could play very average and have off shooting days during the first two rounds and still escape with W's considering the talent that they have. If this happens and they can catch fire and shoot hot in the 3rd and/or 4th rounds, they could potentially make a run. You never know what will happen in March and they definitely have the talent to compete. In comparing this team to last year's, it is evident that OSU should draw a higher seed and have a more favorable first round matchup, but even if they do end up playing a similar team as Siena like last year, I think this year's Buckeye team could handle a Siena-quality team with an average shooting day.

I agree that some games there is no room for margin and you have to play your capable players the 40 minutes. It is obvious of the dropoff on the bench.

However, when you have a scholarship 7 footer on the bench and a PJ Hill who has helped this team in the past, there is absolutely no reason to not play them some minutes when you are up 25 with 10 minutes left in the game.

No one said to clear the bench, but if you offer a guy a scholarship you better have the confidence to play him late in a blowout.

A few would do well to take off those rose colored glasses so they could actually comprehend the posts.

This team may be better than people think. As CBF stated, if Turner never gets hurt, the Buckeyes are likely 19-3 right now and probably ranked top 10 or top 5 in the country. Of course there is room for improvement as there is for any team. But right now, I'm satisfied with the way they are progressing.
