MAC West champion sent packing to begin the quarterfinals

Refs were typical MAC refs (awful), even the color guy on TV was questioning calls.

Coach Zeigler for CMU has been reprimanded once this year for berating the refs in his presser, it may happen again.
EDIT: From the macreportonline twitter feed (updated by someone I know): "Ernie had a number of, um, praises for the referees in the presser."

Western Michigan earns the "team from shit half of MAC in semis" badge of honor.

Akron earns the "luckiest team in MAC award", as their #2 (or is it #3, with the West winner automatically getting the #2?) seed gave them the MAC West half of the bracket, while #1 Kent has to beat two teams from the good half to make the finals.

Which means, logically, Akron will also earn the "make Heretic look stupid" award when they either lose today or tomorrow.

West winner (CMU) gets the 2 by default, even though they're usually the 6th-7th best team in the league.

Akron is the 3

Either way, the West teams were all piled on that half of the bracket. BG (out) and Akron were the only East teams on their half of the bracket... Akron will not meet a MAC East team until the final, if they make it that far.
Kent, Ohio, Miami, and Buffalo are all on the other half, and the West teams were knocked out of that side in the first round... so Akron is lucky.

Turns out Central Michigan wasn't the only one who got sent packing earlier today in the MAC...

Toledo coach Gene Cross has resigned after their 4-28 masterpiece this year.

Akron and Eastern Michigan knotted at 71 and heading to overtime.

These refs are calling fouls like they get paid on commission to do so, Akron may not have any players left by the end of OT.

Hahaha Charles Ramsey is flipping a shit.

How can you try to defend your player throwing a dirty elbow into someones face, tell the ref to get his hands off you, cuss them out, and try to go at the opposing teams bench as a head coach?

Total embarrassment.

FWIW, I think it was a boiling over of the entire game:

5 technical
3 ejections
1 flagrant
496,000 fouls, most ticky-tack

Ohio up 40-24 on Kent at the half, and that was with DJ Cooper on the bench with foul trouble for like 15 minutes.

Kent looks like shit, it's going to be an early exit for them if they don't come out firing in the second half.

First half shooting:
Kent: 25% from field, 10% from three
Ohio: 56% from field, 50% behind the arc

Kent is clawing back, has it within 7 already 6 minutes into the half.

Not surprising:
1. Kent is the best in the MAC by far for a reason
2. Ohio isn't known for stringing together 2 halves of basketball.

Lead for Ohio has ballooned back to 12 with 7:30 left, after Kent had it down to 3.

Singletary is getting away with charges all over the place. That's at least 2, and I think 3 times in the last 3 minutes.

They are being nice to him because he had 4 fouls by about the 10:00 mark.
He's one of the best players on the best teams in the MAC. With usual conference refs working the tourney, you're going to get calls.
He should have been gone on the drive to the basket against KVK, but KVK's rep for stupid fouls must have resonated with the refs.
He'd have fouled out in the first half with the EMU/Akron refs.

UPSET!

Ohio 81
Kent State 64

Kent will have to use their automatic NIT bid for winning the regular season title.

Armon Bassett (Ohio): 38 points, 16/16 from the line (MAC tournament record)

Not only did he not miss a free throw, but I didn't see a single one even touch the rim.

The MAC leaders looked really bad today. Akron was lucky to win in two overtimes, and Kent looked just plain awful. Whoever finally does get in the NCAA is definitely going to be one and done. And I don't see any wins in the NIT.

FWIW Kent would have been a one and done in the NCAA tournament too. They were the class of the MAC, but that's not saying much.

I think they can take one in the NIT with a lucky draw.

I voted for Miami, even before the Kent State upset. Charlie Coles is known for his MAC Tourney magic.

Ohio University isnt going anywhere ts. Even with the loss, Kent has more a chance of a NCAA bid than OU after you lose in the conference tourney!!

I never said they were (but thanks for putting the words in my mouth).
Kent has absolutely no shot at an at-large... they would have had a miniscule chance had they got to the MAC finals and lost. It's a one bid league.

It's still nice to fuck over the 1 seed.
