buckeyedan, I know weather also royally screws up baseball and softball.
I've always thought they should play the school season for baseball and softball in the summer. I grew up in Iowa and that's how we did it. Never had a game postponed because of snow; occasionally for rain, of course, and once had one shortened because of tornadic activity, but never snowed out.
Of course, we also played a lot of our games at night under the lights and fielded full JV and varsity teams.
And with playing in the summer, there was never worry of sectional and district games conflicting with regular-season games -- the regular season ended, then the tournament began.

You could easily add two games to the schedule without lengthening the season. Like a previous poster stated, check out your school's schedule to see how many one-game weeks they have. And it's not like having three games in a week is going to kill anyone, anyway. Most states play well above 20 games.

Adding the extra games would help athletic departments with an extra gate and allow teams a couple of extra non-conference games to find teams "on their level".

That's actually a really good idea. And the teams who the playoff teams were supposed to play could easily find each other if they wanted to so that they could stay at 22 games.

I think adding 2 games without lengthening the season isnt a bad idea at all. There would not be an issue of long busrides as one poster said. Basketball is in a different boat then football. Small teams are able to take on bigger teams in BBall cause there is no issue with points. So if small school (Gibsonburg) needed to add 2 games, it COULD look to Fremont Ross for one. That would NEVER happen in football.

For it. Would not impact other sports seasons. More opportunitiy for more playing opporuntity for student-athletes. A little more money in the coffers. Greater opportunity to schedule interesting or rival non-league games.

22 games would be great. Just eliminate some of the 5 allowed scrimmages. Way to many scrimmages.

I kinda like this idea. Teams are already traveling. It will bring the schools more revenue. It gets counted into the teams record.

One thing if this were ever added. It would put an * beside all career/season records.

No reason for the *. Teams in Ohio used to play 18-game schedules and I don't see any * today. Other issues like the 3-point shot have impacted scoring records as well, but no *.

Good point. Although I did not mean a printed * just a mental one. If you look at the average high school gym size 70yrs ago, that could cause one to place a mental * on the record as well.

I'd rather have individual workouts and only one dead period from right after the season until May 1. I'd also like to see the divisions go from 4 to 6 like football.

No need for more divisions in Basketball....Football is a different animal, very often do smaller teams play larger teams in basketball/baseball and win. Remember you only need a handful of good players in basketball....you need a dozen at least in football.

I think you would find that scheduling the extra games with teams in your area might be hard to do. Many schools are not going to play 3 games in a week and with most schools in a conference that plays twice per week usually (with an occasional bye) it may be tough to find schools that are free to play on that open date. That means more travel (and expenses). If it needs to be implemented then as someone said earlier do away with one or two scrimmages and practice days leading up to the season. The coaches association will never go for that. We might as well make basketball a year round sport for high school, with a 13 week break for football, and a 6 week break for baseball/track.
