I'd say that anyone doing that to the degree you're suggesting was misguided. I'd agree with "pumping up the growth of this site and the faltering of the other". Or if "demise of the other" includes the concept that it costs more money to run that place, so their demise could be set in stone by the decline in traffic they're getting. They used to be a top 100K Alexa site. They've fallen out of that zone and, on a daily/weekly basis are lucky to be in the top 250K right now. Essentially, we've become a viable alternative and they've been damaged. Perhaps to the point where they'll be considered unprofitable and unnecessary by their owners. Perhaps not.
