our own fight? if the french didnt help us, we might still be ruled by a king. why shouldnt we give back to other countries?

Fair point. Just remember the French were not so much concerned with our freedom as they were with their own self interest in opposing their adversary, the British Empire.

haha yeah, not saying they didnt have other motives. plus, not everyone has the opportunity to just pick up and leave to settle in some other land and make it their own. pretty much all the land on earth is already spoken for.

You think the military that we spent 1 trillion dollars on this year ought to sit idly by?

Perhaps list some problems in America that you think common morality and/or urgency would require swifter and greater attention from our government
Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq
The economy
The housing market
Numerous others

These affect people in OUR country. And sadly we need all the money we can get to fix these problems. That $1,000,000,000 we spent on the military was because we are in 2 wars draining money out of us, not to help Haiti.
So you think, as one of your listed examples, that common morality and/or urgency requires that the U.S. government should focus on the societal need to improve the value of homes which lost value in the mortgage crisis above helping fellow human beings in our hemisphere get basic food and health care, who don't even have homes, after their city was destroyed?

There are not people without homes in this country?

I get what you are saying and I know my opinion isn't exactly morally correct. But damnit we are broke, and when you are on welfare you don't donate to the salvation army.

Exactly. The French didn't help us because they were concerned with our freedom, they did it in their own self interest.

What you (GD) are insinuating is that the US is helping Iraq get freedom because it's the right thing to do, when in fact we are looking out for our own self interests (oil security).

This land was spoken for when the first European settlers arrived, they just killed off the natives.
