People actually watch Thursday games because they put good teams on there. The MAC plays every other weekday (and no one watches) .

The Big Ten is really the only BCS Conference that holds out on Thursday games. I'm surprised they would do it for an OSU home game because they sell out regardless of when its played (so there's really nothing to gain), but for the Big Ten to do some games (both conference and OOC) with some of the crappier conference schools as hosts it would help those places out, I would think. It's like USC... you never see them in the Coliseum on a Thursday, but they play many an away Pac-10 matchup on a Thursday and its good for those schools and the conference.

This. The MAC now plays on Wed. or Tues. The ACC, Big East, B12, SEC, MWC, P10 have all played on Thursday nights. One thing the Thursday Night game gives them is a national audience for this game. Had this game been played on a Saturday afternoon OSU would get the same audience they would normally get-- the Midwest. Throw this game on Thursday night on ESPN and it is the only game on. Every football fan from LA to Boston will be watching the game.

which is key. will the game be on espn? if so, then this is move is a positive.

if not, say its stuck on the big ten network, then the only benefit i see is the extra few days to prepare for the U.

I'm pretty sure OSU would not be scheduling this game for Thursday night if it was not the game of the week on ESPN. No other network carries the Thursday night game that I know of.

Thursday night games can be a lot of fun, I've been to two, Auburn-Virginia in Charlottesville in 1997, and Virginia-Auburn in Auburn in 1998. They were both good times, and season openers for both teams. It does help getting a game in early to give you time for the next week, and the national tv exposure is great. These weren't crap games, Auburn won the SEC west in 1997 and UVA was very good both years.

Thursday Night Football = ESPN national broadcast. Something is severely messed up if it ends up otherwise.

USC @ Hawaii will be the late game of course.. and then the OSU and other USC game will probably be on EPSN or ESPN2 depending on your locale. I love this thursday game because labor day weekend is very busy for me and I usually can't go to the game. This makes it a nice four day weekend for me and what a better way to kick it off than to go to campus and catch the game.

"ESPN Network" could be anything from ESPN itself to ESPNU, ESPN Regional, or ESPN360. I figure they'll want USC on one of the big networks though.

He never said he was a Brown's season ticket holder, he said he was a Cleveland season ticket holder, meaning he is from Cleveland and has OSU season tickets. Playing on a Thursday night isn't a big deal for people in the Columbus area, but it is for people coming from far away. He probably won't get home from Cleveland until around 3:00am, and if he leaves after work Thursday he won't get there until right about kickoff. That's nearly 6 hours in a car for a 3 hour game against Marshall. If this were USC, it'd be a different story. If you're coming from far away you probably have to take Friday off at least, and maybe a half day Thursday too.

I get it, but I don't get it.

The students are not here yet, and that means that OSU is giving out even more alumni tickets. It makes the logistic that much more difficult for alums driving in from all over the state. And I think it's a little selfish from a business standpoint (like I said I get it). OSU will obviously make some money off of being on National TV, but how many businesses basically survive solely on OSU home games? All the bars in the area, the grocery stores, beer sales, apparel shops, etc....

The outside businesses are the one's that are going to be hurt by this. How much money do they usually make off of that first Saturday home game of the year? And now they will have a very small window to make any money. I can't imagine their being all the tailgates or people heading to campus to enjoy the atmosphere.

The Buckeyes could play on a tuesday in september at 2:00pm and the place and area would be packed!!! Your underestimating the fan base big time if you think people are going to show up and spend cash and tailgate.

Are you going to post this diatribe next year when OSU plays in Miami week 2? That's losing a home game completely.

The Miami game? It's an away game. I'm not saying that OSU shouldn't play away games.

This is an OSU home game, and like I said, I get it. It's about exposure and a national audience in a game that no one really cares about.

But it's not like people don't work on Thursdays. I honestly don't think as many people head to campus on a Thursday compared to how many would on a Saturday and I don't know how you could say otherwise.

Again, it makes sense for OSU from an Athletic Dept standpoint as well as national exposure and possibly even generating some Heisman talk for Pryor early in the year.

But the local businesses have to be pissed.

Its Ohio State Football. The diehards will take Friday off, you can count on it. There will be 101,000 in there on Thursday night.
