remember jj at OSU and he was a major stud. certainly much more heralded coming out of h.s. than Turner. and certainly his college "body of work" is much greater than Turner's. having said that, what Turner is doing this year is amazing. they are different types of players, but "the villain" is a legit candidate for ncaa POY this year, and at times has been flat out unstoppable. he essentially single handedly beat Purdue on their home floor in the last 5 minutes. JJ may edge him out but turner at least belongs in the discussion.

I would agree. The major difference in the two, is their level coming out of HS. As mentioned, JJ was an absolutely stud in HS, when he stepped on the court at OSU. Besides Lebron, JJ was the best HS player I have ever seen.
Turner wasn't near as polished. But his improvement over the last 3yrs, has been as impressive as any I have seen. He still needs to cut down on his turnovers and improve his long range shooting. JJ didn't turn it over, but was comparible with the perimeter shooting.
But JJ just had that "something" right from the getgo. In crunch time, he was money. He as unselfish, but knew when to take over a game. JJ just had a great feel and IQ for the game. Turner does as well...but not quite at the level of JJ.
Having watched both, I'd definately give JJ the edge. But Turner continues to impress me more and more.

i wish i was old enough to have watched JJ. seems like i missed a lot...

I feel that Jackson had the better college career but that Turner is the better player. May sound weird to some but I think it is a good evaluation.

Definately sounds weird when u add in that OSU was a top 5 team JJ junior year, that he was a two time all american, and the college player of the year. He was also Big Ten freshman of the year, avg. 16pts, over 5rb per game as a frosh. JJ got over 18pts his soph year. Junior season, over 22pts a game, national player of the year. Career over 19pts per game, 6rb, 4 asst. Although I never thought JJ was a great outside shooter, he did shoot over 40% his junior year as well.
Again, Turner is flat out good. Just not at the level of JJ and hasn't had near the overall individual nor team success that JJ did in his three years at OSU.

I'm not sure how many on here actually remember that first Big Ten championship with Jackson but not a single guy from that team, aside from Jackson, went pro. Baker was the 6'1 PG, 6'3 Jamaal Brown at SG, 6'6 JJ at wing, 6'7 Perry Carter at C, and 6'6/6'7 Tregg Lee at PF. Chris Jent came off the bench and Lawrence Funderburke didnt transfer in until the Fab 5 joke year.

This thread is ridiculous. Turner is not even the best player in the Big Ten. Jimmy Jackson was a 2 time All-American at OSU. No brainer, Jimmy Jackson.

And you might be right as well actually.

But one has to remember how much BETTER college basketball was in the day of Jackson. A couple of years ago ESPN Classic showed OSU v. UM during Jackson and the Fab 5 day as well as others and the college game then was FAR better than it is now. If you get a chance watch and see for yourself.

That OSU team was way better than the current ones Turner has had to work with during his time. If Turner was given the same team as JJ I feel he could do the same things. Also not only have I watched those seasons with JJ, I have several games on VHS right now here.

I find it funny that alot of people on here take shots at Michigan's Fab 5 teams as if they were/are the only people who spend money on players...........I know and have known lots of college basketball players over time, some at OSU, almost every major D1 school spends illegal money on players. Flatout.

He racks up stats but does not really take this team to the next level. JJ had his team close to the final four. Why because everyone stayed involved. Turner does not keep everyone involved. I see many times when our offense is stand and watch Turner drive. Then when he does need help the rest of team is completely out of the flow of the game and cant get the job done. This is a no brainer JJ by far.

Incorrect..Chris Jent played in the NBA and actually has something JJ does not..AN NBA ring. Chris played for the Houston Rockets when they won the whole enchilada. With that being said, JJ is far superior than Turner. If you are going to look at points rebounds etc. you also have to factor in turnovers. Evan turns the ball over way too much compared to JJ. And side note, I have met JJ several times as I had relation on the team during his era and JJ is, was, and will always be a class act

I agree where you are coming from with Jimmy, but disagree with you on observation of Turner. Just look at Ohio State’s productivity when Turner was out with an injury. Players on the team stats were down. When so many teams are focus on him, it leads room for someone like Diebler to make a 3-point basketball or free up someone like Buford and Lighty to make plays. Ohio State probably isn’t a NCAA tournament team without Evan.

Whoever would actually consider this on a serious level needs help.

Well, all u have to do is see about a month ago with OSU was without Turner, and went 3-3. The 3 wins were vs nobody. The offense was in the TANK without Turner and Diebler and Buford both struggled BIG TIME without Turner. That my friend, is called making your teammates better.
Just racks up stats? LOL Yes, he didn't play well vs WVU in second half. It happens. You can't expect him to do it all everytime. Otehrs have to step up. JJ was great, and especially at crunch time. But there were times he failed as well. It happens to all great players.

I totally disagree with you!!! Just because TOSU struggled to score without Turner does not mean he makes everyone better. All that means is that he is the only true scoring threat on the team. I agree without Turner TOSU is done.With him a tournament team but thats because of HIS scoring ability not making the players around him better. Turner has a tendency to not involve everyone at times and it shows because the rest of the team cant get in the flow of the game and they stand around on offense then. JJ was a great passer and his understanding of the game was much better than Turners knowing he needed help from his teammates to be a special team. Part of it is that the game has changed since JJ played. It is now alot more of an indivdual game than when JJ played. I dont remember JJ driving to hole and coming up empty as many times as Turner does. Turner forces things alot instead of letting the game come to him. JJ seem to let the game come to him more which in turn kept everyone involved. If Turner learns not to force the issue so much then he might be better than JJ as he is a better rebounder but until then sorry JJ understood that he needed his teammates. I'm not sure Turner is quite there yet on that.
