Scale of 1-10, 10 being GOAT coach, 1 being 'should be fired immediately', 5 being 'average coach'
Where would you rate him?
I give him a 9.

It probably would have been more interesting to take this poll before the bowl win, and then after.
Oh well, snooze you lose.

I think you could also take the poll before and after any loss and see significantly different results.sleeper wrote: It probably would have been more interesting to take this poll before the bowl win, and then after.

Bottom line, he wins a lot of games and he won't just leave the team in limbo like some coach have done lately. The stability Tressel has at the head coaching position will keep OSU at the top of college football for some time.

He's a good coach....but he isn't a great coach. I gave him a 6
I would put him 4th right now in the top 5 coaches in the nation
1.Urban Meyer
2.Nick Saban
3.Mack Brown
4.Jim Tressel
5.Chris Peterson

He's a solid 8 for all the tangible coaching attributes I gave him a 9 based on how well he represents the University by rarely (if ever) mis-speaking on some random question. He never trips up in that department. It makes for boring pressers but at least you don't see him repeatedly on ESPN defending some stupid remark.

Top 5 out of 120 would make for a really good/great coach in my book. Wouldn't you say?Elliot Stabler wrote: He's a good coach....but he isn't a great coach. I gave him a 6

10 for being a solid ambassador to the university, the football program, being an elite recruiter, and player development.
6 for his out dated coaching philosophy
= 8 all-around

His outdated philosophy has won 4 BCS bowl games and a NC.
He is a 9 simply for the 3 BCS losses, no coach is perfect but I wouldn't trade Tressel for anyone. No matter what the situation you will always know that Tressel will NEVER put OSU through the bullshit that these other coaches have done recently. He has taken an OSU program to elite status in the 00's and I don't see it stopping.

I suddenly feel an intense urge to knock on wood. I thought the same thing about Jim Obrien before he got caught. I think Tressel does a much better job than Obrien, but I was willing to live with Obie's record because I felt like we were doing things the right way...devil1197 wrote:No matter what the situation you will always know that Tressel will NEVER put OSU through the bullshit that these other coaches have done recently. I agree he's already the 2nd best coach in OSU history. What would it take for him to be the best?Emmett Brown wrote:He will go down as the second best coach in program history and maybe the best coach ever at tOSUj_crazy wrote: 8

Tough to supplant Woody as he arguably built Ohio State up to what it is today. All followers have been saddled with maintaining the program. Some have fared better than others, and JT's record may actually surpass Woody's accomplishments, but Tressel can never build the program over again imo.FatHobbit wrote:I agree he's already the 2nd best coach in OSU history. His pressers at the Rose Bowl were pretty funny actually.ytownfootball wrote: He's a solid 8 for all the tangible coaching attributes I gave him a 9 based on how well he represents the University by rarely (if ever) mis-speaking on some random question. Some guy asked him..actually hold on let me find the official quote. Okay this is the transcript. Some guy asked him about Joe Pa.
You are only 165 victories behind Joe: Joe who?
Paterno. Have you given any thought to chasing him? Chasing him? We chase him once a year. That's the beauty of being in our conference. It's a thrill to have him in our conference. It's a thrill to have him in our conference meetings because they're not boring. (Laughter.) He never hesitates to let us know what he's thinking.
At each conference meeting there's a designated chairman, and it goes alphabetically, and whoever's name is up there, they're the chairman of the meeting that week. Regardless, Joe is the chairman. Every letter begins with P or whatever. (Laughter.)
It's just been fun to be around him. Will I be coaching in my 40th something season as a head coach at Ohio State? Probably not.

2 more BCS national championships will pass woody.
to break down my analysis:
10 for "face of the school" BS
10 for stability and philosophy
8 for coaching strategy (it works, but can be trumped)
7 for recruiting (I'm of the belief that his top gets were sold early and required little work down the stretch (even Pryor). He needs to close better.)

Post game presser after Rose Bowl. They ask Tressell if he was aware the longstanding tradition of Oregon fans sneeking in a shot of tequila after they score each TD. Tressel replies, I wasnt aware of that but none of their fans got drunk tonight then!!

Better than average, but has you scratching your head way too much to be 10.

I know we've seen the fall of some powers (Notre Dame and Michigan), but I just have a feeling that no matter who the coach is, OSU will always be a top 10 team.
With that said, I'd rate Tressel a 9 as a head coach, but a 7 for creativity. If he had a GREAT offensive coordinator I think he would quiet all criticism.

Woody at OSUj_crazy wrote: 2 more BCS national championships will pass woody.
205-61-10 (152-37-7 in conference)
16-11-1 against Michigan
13 big ten titles
5 national titles
Tressel at OSU
94-21 (59-13 in conference)
8-1 against Michigan
6 big ten titles
1 national title
I think it will take more than 2 BCS national titles for him to catch Woody.
I do think just being OSU does quite a bit of recruiting for him. (Just like at any of the other big name schools.)j_crazy wrote:7 for recruiting (I'm of the belief that his top gets were sold early and required little work down the stretch (even Pryor). He needs to close better.)

however, with an urban meyer type coach ohio state WINS national titles in 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007.
2005-2007 the ohio state teams had more nfl talent than any other team in college football and came away with zero national titles. ZERO!! and two of those national title losses were blow outs.
like i said, tressell leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to Xs and Os...especially considering the talent he brings in and develops.
