A friend of mines laptop is getting these errors that Windows can't check for updates, and Windows Defender can't search for updates.

Both have the same error code, 80072EFD and 0x80072efd.

Anyone else experience this or know a fix?

Thanks ts.

I'll try those tricks I found later when I'm at her place.

Yes, I agree, she should've bought a MAC... haha.

An option to report it to Microsoft never popped up.

Some of those links suggested turning off the firewall(s) and Windows Defender. I did both and still nothing.

Any chance she is using a proxy?

Give this a try:

IE > Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings > then make sure everything is un-checked under "Automatic configuration" and "Use a proxy server for your lan" is un-checked under "proxy server" unless you are using a proxy server

Ok, finally figured it out...

It was a series of tricks but the last one finally worked. Had to go into the BITS under Windows Services and set it from Manual to Automatic, refresh the browser, and wham it worked. 37 updates were waiting, and then some.

Thanks huddlers!!

Look at the window a little closer.

"The operation completed successfully."
