I get that. But invasion/occupation is apples-to-oranges to what we're talking about. People are often indifferent or unwilling to take up arms against their own country....and tyrannical govts usually deal with those people pretty ruthlessly and effectively.

And none of these countries are close to being like the US. Apples-to-oranges.

It should be mentioned at some point that while mass "active-shooter" incidents have increased, the overall gun homicide rate is roughly half of what it was 25 years ago. The vibe these mass shootings cause, that one can't walk around their block without getting a cap in their ass is simply untrue for the overwhelming majority of Americans.

I'm just saying I don't think it's your guns keeping this country from falling into tyranny....but if it did, your guns aren't what is going to save us from tyranny.

On a related note, thoughts on the girlfriend/roommate?

Obviously authorities want to talk to her. But if you were her and even if you had absolutely nothing to hide, would you still be maybe a little concerned about coming back to the US?

Was there any resistance to begin with in those countries? Most countries I see giving up guns normally have the "oh, ok here you go! Nothing bad can happen out of this" mentality.

I never said the guns were saving you from tyranny, but it is a deterrent from tyranny. The government knows the country will be destroyed and their goal of full control/compliance is not worth it.

If you include suicides, which comprise the majority of gun deaths, sure.

Otherwise, I believe the surge in gun-related homicides began to take off in the 1960's. I don't know why that is, seems the leading theory is the rise of gangs and drugs. But simply blaming homicide rates on gun ownership might be intellectually lazy.

Ummm, ever heard of Tiananmen Square? Stalin? There's a reason you never "heard of resistance" in those countries, and that's the point. The police state goes hand-in-hand with tyranny, and the police state is used to squash any resistance movements and strongly signal it won't be tolerated.

Neither was door to door combat and not even close to the same culture as the US in terms of freedom and the right to bear arms. I’ll stick to the same logic if a powerful military is all you need we would have stabilized the Middle East by now. Same logic applies to Vietnam.

If the US Government tried this nation, both sides would end up losers.

It only took two nukes to turn the empire of Japan infamous for the Brutal Rape of Nanking to bend to the will of the more powerful state actors and the country was an economic powerhouse within a few decades.

The warrior culture of the Japanese could not save them. Our guns wouldn't save us.

What I mean is that this is going to exhibit A for,the mass murderer who is not "mentally ill" in the Jared Loughner sense.

Point being that "teh country has a mental health problem" argument will not encompass this guy.

And for some reason people act like gun suicides aren't a ducking total waste for a country. I have had 3 guys I knew in high school blow their brains out.
