If YOUR team committed a penalty, you kind of screw yourself out of however long the play took, but that's it. Not sure your scenario matters, since the clock does not run after a penalty the last 5 minutes of a half.

Yes, but they don't PUT TIME back on the clock. So if a play runs and take 7-8 seconds or whatever, you hit the 2-min warning. Like I said, I've seen it happen a couple of times. And your team doesn't have to commit the penalty - it could be a hold or OPI that you have to take because they got too many yards, possibly even a first.

Yes, a personal reason why I hardly watch any non Browns football games. I didn't even watch a playoff game last yr, doesn't look like it's changing. I used to be a guy where the world stopped for football.

Think about how many people you know who dropped cable in the past 2 years.

I haven't had it in around 5, and it's only getting more common.

I've actually decreased my watching, including Saturdays. I used to plant myself in front of the TV or at a bar all weekend. Now I'm just consumed with other shit.

I’m enjoying the season. I really don’t give a flying a fuck about what these guys do during national anthems or whenever. People that “boycott” sports games because their feelz got hurt when a player did something are funny.

I don't boycott for any reason, but the product is not what it once was. Too many penalties, stoppages for reviews, dumb rulings etc. I much prefer the college game now, which was definitely not the case 5 years ago. Just I can't stand college games that take 4.5 hours.

I havent watched an NFL regular season game all the way through in years. Even Redzone starts to get annoying when the bullshit reviews and awful roughing/PI calls are shown. And they only show the damn big plays!

I've always preferred college overall, especially from the from the actual game aspect, different offenses, wild plays, etc. Pro for the show and speed of the game.

I would say it is part of the reason, but definitely not the only reason ratings have dropped. There are many reasons that have added up to the decline imo:

-Roger Goodell. It could just start and end with this as there are many sub reasons under Goodell, which make it difficult to watch the NFL (arbitrary punishments, favoring certain teams, being a hypocrite on many issues, drug policy, etc)
-Lack of parity and consumers finally adjusting and realizing parity is gone. You're going to see this problem in the NBA soon imo.
-Anthem protests
-Politicizing the game in general
-NFL rules favoring offenses
-NFL rules changing the league to the point that if you don't have a legitimate franchise QB fall to you in the draft you will never have a chance to succeed
-Viewership options. Compare the NFL to the MLB, NBA, and college football in terms of viewership options. The NFL makes it extremely difficult to watch the games you want to watch without A) going to a bar or B) paying a hefty amount for the direct TV package. With streaming the NFL is outdated with their packages. It's especially shitty for those who don't live in the same market was their favorite team.
-As COA pointed out, play in general has been subpar. In the last 3 years there have been maybe 3-4 good prime time games.


I am sure I am missing other reasons. I still like the NFL/football, but outside of the Browns I am definitely not revolving my entire Sunday around football anymore.

I watch a lot less these days. It's a combination of a crappier product and the fact that I've got better things to do on my days off than sit in front of the tv all day.

That's kind of my situation. I just have too much going on to regularly dedicate an entire day to sitting down in front of a TV and drinking (I mean, usually, it's seeing a buddy's band or going to a party and drinking while a TV might be on in the background, but still -- I'm doing the drinking while moving around and socializing instead of sitting in front of a TV and yelling at it with a couple buddies). I still do it sometimes; particularly on "recuperation Sunday", but it doesn't happen as often. Probably doesn't help that we've had a really nice couple months, weather-wise. Too nice to be glued to a TV all day.

When I watch, I do, too. Some games suck and some teams suck, but the overall product is still solid. And with how unpredictable this season has been so far, it's just added to the enjoyment, as it's hard to tell who will do well on any given week. The majority of games essentially are coin flips. I'd hate to be a gambler this year -- I can't even pick straight-up winners half the time, let alone deal with spreads.

Would you say that age has a factor also? We're older, more financially independent = being able to do more activities? Then factor in a significant other (maybe one that doesn't even like sports *gasp*)

I know when in college, I lived for the weekends and football.

These are pretty much the reasons I don't watch nearly as much as I once did...however, if people want to boycott these spoiled asswipes, I have no problem with that either. Most of these guys haven't a clue what they're kneeling for anyway--it's the old 'pied piper' syndrome.

Used to watch a lot more on Sundays. Now? Nah. As soon as the Browns get down by two scores, I know it's pretty much over and more likely to spiral downward than become enjoyable. Would be nice to have a watchable product but I guess that's too much to ask.

I do agree with the rules, etc watering it down a bit. I predict that the football we see in 2017 will be much different, if it even still exists, in 2037.

Older we get the less we watch, no doubt. For safety reasons they have legislatively decreased the big time hits.

They don't hit in practice, only one padded day a week I believe now, so it takes more weeks for the product to get better because they don't do much of it in the preseason.

I skimmed through the responses so Idk if this has been discussed much yet but injuries really take away the enjoyment for me. It's mid-October and we've lost arguably the best QB, RB, and WR for the season. Not to mention Amendola, Eric Berry, JJ Watt, Dalvin Cook. Some of those injuries take away the incentive to watch their teams completely.
"Can't wait to watch Hundley and the Packers host the Saints this Sunday!" said no one.
