Looks like Ford might be going to the Mustang in 2011:

"NASCAR is expected to change the shape of the front bumper on all Sprint Cup cars for the 2011 season to help improve brand identity for its auto manufacturers. For Ford, that could eventually lead to a change in what nameplate it puts on its car, with a possible move from the Fusion currently being used to the Mustang. But first, Ford officials want to see how the changes affect the front of the Cup car. NASCAR Vice President Robin Pemberton said Friday the sanctioning body is close to approving the final specifications for the new front bumper. The change will be in the bottom half of the bumper, which currently has a rectangular indentation where the bottom half does not stick out as far as the top half. The new front bumper will be more curved, and the change would eliminate the need for the front splitter braces because much of that area of empty space will now be part of the new curved lower half. "We're working on it we're close on that," Pemberton said. "It's just time for a style change. We've been working on it for about a year now. We're working on [the brand identity] with the manufacturers." Some of what is being changed to the Cup car is being used on the new Nationwide car, which is going to be run for four races in 2010 and then full-time in 2011. Ford and Dodge are introducing muscle-car nameplates (Mustang and Challenger) in conjunction with the new Nationwide car. Toyota and Chevrolet are keeping the Camry and Impala nameplates. Ford Racing's North America Motorsports Director Jamie Allison said Thursday that if everything goes well in implementing the Mustang into the Nationwide Series, as well as the changes to the front bumper of the Cup car, he would consider changing the Ford nameplate for Cup to Mustang. "We want to see more brand identity in the cars," Allison said Thursday during an event at the Henry Ford Museum near Detroit. "We've been asking NASCAR because we've liked what transpired in the Nationwide." The manufacturers seem ready for the change and have run testing with the cars in simulation and wind tunnels."

Kahne's ride for 2011 looks like it's going to turn out to be in the 09 car owned by James Finch. The team already gets it's engines and chassis from Hendricks Motorsports.

"Hendrick Motorsports and James Finch are working on a partnership to put Kasey Kahne in the #09 Chevy for 2011. Multiple sources indicate the deal could be completed within the next few weeks. Hendrick will not be allowed to own the car under NASCAR's four-team rule, leaving Finch in the position of ownership, although engines and chassis would continue to come from Hendrick. Once completed, the partnership solves the HMS dilemma of where to put Kahne next season. Signed to take over the #5 Chevy in 2012, Kahne leaves RPM at the end of the year but Hendrick already has four signed drivers -- Mark Martin, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson -- under contract for 2011. Stewart-Haas Racing was the first option for Kahne, but sources claim sponsorship and financial constraints for that team have made such a move impossible. Instead, the partnership with Phoenix Racing is a compromise solution. Under a one-year deal, Kahne will be installed with a single-car team that gives him the opportunity to continue running full-time. Here's the kicker: once Kahne moves to HMS, sources claim the man he's replacing, Mark Martin, may be interested in purchasing the Phoenix team for 2012 as he scales back his driving career. Spokesmen on both sides have denied a deal is in the works. According to Hendrick spokesman Jesse Essex, "Our position with regard to 2011 has not changed. We continue to be open to various options, and nothing has been determined at this time." The 51-year-old Martin also remains uncommitted to his future beyond 2011."

Big fine for the #38 team after the Pocono race as well. They had illegal bleeder valves on the car.

"NASCAR has issued penalties, suspensions and fines to the #38 team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as a result of rules infractions committed during last Sunday's event at Pocono Raceway. The team was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-J (any determination by NASCAR officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-10.7J (unapproved modification to valve stem hardware) of the 2010 NASCAR Rule Book. As a result, crew chief Steve Lane has been fined $100,000, suspended for the next 12 NASCAR Sprint Cup events, suspended from NASCAR until Sept. 15 and placed on probation until Dec. 31. Car chief Richard Bourgeois and tire specialist Michael Harrold have also been suspended from the next 12 NASCAR Sprint Cup events, suspended from NASCAR until Sept. 15 and placed on probation until Dec. 31. Driver Travis Kvapil and owner Doug Yates have been penalized with the loss of 150 driver and 150 owner points, respectively."

Yeah it would be silly to have Mustang in Nationwide but not Cup. I posted the 16 Mustang a few pages back, the same 16 that has a new crew after Roush found out about the strip club fight.

Good to hear about Finch getting help from Hendrick. I read Walmart could be on the 24 and they are working on a deal with Nascar for exclusive marketing. Motorsports Authentics, Action, and Americrown can suck it.

The initial report was 300 k...was supposed to surpass Carl Long's fine and suspensions. But in the end, from what I hear, NASCAR felt that having a bigger engine in your car is a bigger violation than bleeder valves. Which, IMO, is not true. The bleeder valves would give you a CLEAR advantage over everyone else, compared to what Carl Long's difference in the engine sizes would have.

That was a quick race. 2 in a row for Denn knee Hamlin. I got home from fishing and there was only 50 to go. He didn't wreck on his way to victory lane today, Mike Ford will be pleased.

Yeah, was a very quick race. Was over about 4:00. Boring as hell too, though. Typical Michigan race. Kurt finished with a 3rd place and moved up another point in the standings! Keep on knockin' 'em down one by one!

Jeff Gordon's team noticed 'discoloration' in their fuel a short time ago. They ran to Robin Pemberton to report it. Nascar has taken it for testing along with a sample of fuel from the 88 team. Bob Dillner said it could be ethanol.

Kurt Busch has a brand new chassis for the road course, tested at V.I.R. a couple weeks ago.

Kasey Kahne was flying like the Dukes of Hazzard, all 4 tires in the air.

Ugh, that disgusts me...Jimmie sure as hell didn't deserve it, but what are you going to do. Marcos completely stopped on the track saving fuel for whatever damn reason and it was quite clear that he was going to run away with the race. I'm calling a conspiracy, guaranteed you wouldn't have seen that rule implemented if Jimmie was guilty of the same without knowing the rule.

Can't say the same for Jeff Gordon. By the way, how can you spin at least 3 people and have no penalties? Was his car that much quicker that he had to run people over, or has he simply forgot how to run on a road course?

Dale Jr. finishes in 11th after not hearing much from him the whole race.

Kyle Busch continues his streak of incredibly good finishes or incredibly bad finishes, in this case the latter.

Does anyone else think that NASCAR needs to remove the chute from their circuit? I miss the giant loop that went down into a "canyon".

I was so fired up for Marcos to win, can't believe the luck. His crew chief, Frankie Kerr was a great dirt sprint driver from Ohio. Dammit ! Bob Dillner talked with Marcos leaving, he is a class act, just heartbroken and sick. He said it wouldn't happen again in a million years.

I just posted about him about a week ago, he just turned 96. He was one of the 35 men at the meeting that formed Nascar. He owned the car driven by the first Nascar season champion, Red Byron.

Ran in the Top 10 all day long...5 laps to go..Gordon got into him and cut down his tire. Had to pit. Finished last car on the lead lap.

So did Gordon miss anyone on the track? Or did he hit and wreck 40 cars yesterday?
