Yikes. Sorry you had to deal with that ETB. Hope the horse and your daughter are okay.

If your county is anything like mine, they won't let you substitute another horse either. That sucks!

We're hoping that these circumstances allow for different allowances.

I would certainly hope so but in my experience they won't. When is your fair?

I ask because our fair is next week. If they allow an exception and it doesn't conflict with our fair I would be willing to loan you a 4h quality horse if you were interested. It sucks for them to put in that much work and then not be able to show.

The offer still stands if they allow it and you're interested but you are not as close as I thought.

I wish it were that simple - I think it's more accurate to say that their potential for damage when attacking, coupled with their instinct, is about the highest there is. The problem is, there are too many of them owned by people who have neither the ability nor the responsibility to care for them and raise them correctly. On the other side of that coin, I know too many people who swear by the breed and raise them to protect their families (especially their children) to simply say they're all killers, as if every last one is destined for that. I'm not going to tell them their animals will eventually kill, but I will tell them that I ain't them, and that I'm never going to have one, myself.

The wife and I have visited the Franklin County animal shelter two or three times this year, just browsing. And each time, 9 out of 10 dogs there are pit bulls or pit bull mixes. And they sit in their cages pitifully. That confirms to me that people get them for the wrong reason, and simply discard them when reality sets in and the PB become too much too handle.

I am quite willing to tell them their dogs are killers. Their dogs kill others people especially children and old people.

it is that simple. Pitbulls may be domesticated but that doesnt mean they should be house pets.

If you put it that way, yes, it is simple. I was referring to the earlier premise that all of them are killers

Since we've already established that they can be good house pets - with the right owners, who care for them, who train them properly, and who keep them on a short leash (so to speak) and do not allow them to become a problem - what statistics are available to say how many pitbulls there are in the U.S., and how many of them have reportedly attacked someone unprovoked (or loose, etc). Off the top of my head, I'd say you're much more likely to be seriously injured in an auto accident, but I'd like to see the data to be sure.

Having said that, there too many folks for whom they should NOT be house pets, who I have already referenced. All animals come with their unique challenges, and ensuing responsibilities, some with a lot more than others.

There's a video I've seen - in Japan? - of some guy taking his pet orange tortoise for a walk thru the city streets. That thing is huge, it's five or six feet long. And he allows children to come up and feed cabbage to the animal. That's a nasty injury just waiting to happen. The thing looks docile and friendly and cute, sure. But .........

Pit bulls aren't the problem. Bad owners are the problem.

End of discussion.

gosh a ruddies, you are wrong again. The problem is the nature of the beast. Many of those owners could own one of many other breed of dogs without posing a threat to the lives of others.

We should just go ahead and imprison all black people then since they kill a lot of people too!

Liberal logic.

gosh a ruddies using an analogy comparing a group of people with a vicious breed of animal to justify persecuting a minority.

Pitbulls kill more than any other dog breed and you want them banned.

Same with black people.

Tell me more about how that's not racist though!

gosh a ruddie taking a negative characteristic of a type of canine and applying to a race of humans is racism. That is an analogy you chose to make.

No it's a valid analogy. There are millions of pit bulls who never have harmed a single person and you take the small number that have and generalize across an entire species.

No different than doing this to black people. Don't try to rationalize your bigotry with me.

I pray that you get to witness what I have just witnessed, some time in your lifetime. These dogs, if domesticated, need to be on a chain, or need to be fenced in.

gosh a ruddies, despite your claims people of African descent are not a separate species but as much members of humanity as we are. Your attempt to make them analogous to a type of killer dog is repugnant.

I worked in an animal shelter for 2 years which was composed primarily of pitbulls. The only ones who acted violently were the ones who were clearly abused from their previous owners.

You are making statements out of emotion and not fact. Carry on!
