Terrible situation. Kinda odd that the resort doesn't have signs indicating that there may be alligators in the vicinity.

Agreed. A sign the says no swimming isn't the same as a sign that says watch your ass, there are gators.

I heard the wildlife guy (no fucking clue what his position is called) from the area say they didn't say there are gators in the area because they've practically never seen gators in that water. He said there's never been a gator called in from that area.

Exactly. Some things are as simple as "shit happens" and this is unfortunately one of them. Not everything has to have someone or something at fault

Feel really bad for the dad. He will go the rest of his life blaming himself for not being strong enough or quick enough to get child.

Well, it's Florida. There are gators everywhere.

His point was that they've never had a situation at this resort and this pond. The resort said they've never had an encounter with gators in that area.

I mean do you want them to put up a sign that reads gators in pond, instead of no swimming? Lol would that have saved the 2 year old?

Yeah, but a lot of people are too stupid to realize that. I would think a fence and some water barriers could have kept alligators out. They did some things, but not everything they could have and for not much money, either.

I'm not blaming them, but it's pretty unsafe to have beaches and walkways near waters with gators. "No swimming" can be for a lot of reasons, not necessarily because there are gators there. In Disney, I would expect the beach to be safe from alligators.

I was in the Everglades national park, and there was an alligator motionless right by the welcome sign just a few feet from many visitors. I thought it was a prop (tourists, and all). Later when I came back out it was gone! I don't think other people realized it was real, either.

My wife and I are Disneyphiles...we are Vacation Club Members(Disney's version of a time share) and go there at least twice a year. I've been to that resort and other resorts around that lagoon. Thousands of people are at that those resorts every day.

The first thing to realize is that the lagoon is huge...maybe a square mile in area, and connects with other waterways. Transportation watercraft cruise across it in regular intervals dozens of times a day. I have never seen a gator, I've never heard of anyone talk of seeing a gator. As far as I know, in Disney's 50 years of existence this is the first human/ gator encounter.

We are DVC members as well and stayed at the Grand Flo Villas just last week with our 2-year old granddaughter. We walked on that beach and the rocks next to it and never gave the first thought to there being alligators there. The lake is huge and with the amount of activity around there you just don't expect to see wild life other than squirrels and small lizards.

^^^they've killed multiple gators - don't know which one did it and they all look alike

If a gator was spotted hanging around that area, I'm sure FWC would remove and relocate it.

Isn't there a sign when you enter Florida that says "Welcome to Florida. Home of the Gators. Not just the university sports teams, but like real gators. All over the fucking place. We have tons of gators. Big ones. Mean ones. Enjoy your stay!"
