Tomlin has almost a 5 FIP, yet somehow has kept his ERA and WHIP extremely low. That's the definition of a guy pitching way above his head and advanced metrics.

Reminds me of Bronson Arroyo...but put him in any game that is meaningful or where the margin for error is slim, and I'm hating my chances.

Clevinger is starting tomorrow. Anderson sent down. I believe Chisenhall is back as well.

Why is Greg Maddux behind Rick Rueschel on the career FIP?

Damn. Another ass kicking going on.

...........I wonder what the record is for bases loaded walks, Ironman?

Napoli was walked and proceeded to walk his way around the bases to score.

The Reds pitching is bad. 4 straight walks with bases loaded and 2 outs

Cincinnati starters vs Cleveland these last 2 games have an ERA of 18.36 giving up 17 runs on 24 hits. Wow.

Reds are 10-23 with a -85 run differential since their miracle 5-1 start.

Although certain fans think we should just "enjoy the season." :)

Nope. Said enjoy it while we are winning. My surprised a month later you still weren't able to figure that out!

Jayson Stark said one of the shit bullpen pitchers last night for the Reds had 5 walks through 6 batters. Clayton Kershaw has faced 225 batters this year and has walked 4 batters.

Yikes

Mike Clevinger is making his MLB debut tonight as the series shifts to Cincy and he is a favorite on the road. That is rare for a guy to make his MLB debut on the road and be favored in the game.

The oldest level I ever saw that before was at the 8/9 yr old where the kids started pitching to themselves.

Embarrassing.

Last night's game was painful to watch. The Reds were so inept I actually felt sorry for them. If it wasn't for CF's ( Hamilton?) leaping catch against the wall, they looked like a high school team.

Not in any way shape or form and that is an incredible reach on your end.

You said Tomblin was pitching above his metrics. Then as your evidence mentioned that his FIP is 5.0 yet he has a low ERA and WHIP and then you said that he was lucky.

I admit I am not greatly familiar of FIP but when I check out the career FIP I see Rick Reuschel above Greg Maddux. Then I asked you the question of why a lesser pitcher was ahead of one of the best ever in that stat that you used.

Tomlin has also pitched well-above his FIP for about 1.1 seasons. As I said earlier, Bronson Arroyo did it for almost 7 years. That could be a fair comparison to Tomlin, and is a loose way of proving that a guy "just knows how to pitch."

I still predicted that Tomlin wouldn't sustain this. From someone who watched him in Columbus many times, I'm surprised he's in a major league rotation, let alone doing as well as he is.

Thanks

Some power pitchers get extra credit for missing the bat but some of those guys don't have the control in the zone and some of the finesse type guys with better control seem to be better and throwing the pitch to roll up the GIDP or basically getting the batter to hit it where the fielders are.

The Reuschel example just confused me with that particular metric. He wasn't a big strikeout guy and BB surely aren't lower. Just wondering how it was configured to have him above the clearly better pitcher.

It's just one metric that isn't necessarily applicable comparing 2 pitchers, but applicable when comparing a pitcher against his own ERA. Maddux's FIP and ERA were actually very similar, which was more indicative of his overall quality and talent.

Clevinger looks pretty good, 2 hits (one of which a homer). Tribe up 2-1 going into the 5th.

Clevinger has some weird footwork while pitching, but his curve looks pretty nice.
