Earlier this week Obama announced his intensions to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Given that he tried and failed with this idea earlier in his administration, it will probably be dead on arrival this time around too.

So what should USA do about Gitmo?

This article/opinion raises an interesting question: Why not just shoot them?

One of the arguments for closing it is that the Islamic terrorists use Gitmo as a recruiting tool.

The problem with this statement is, ok, so we close Gitmo and send them to crack rocks at Levenworth. Now Levenworth will be the recruitment tool!

I think we need a conversation if they are truly POW. If they are POW, which I think they are, then they should follow the standard practice of how POW are handled.

Admittedly, I don't know much about it.

Kind of lends itself to the question, "Is it "war" if no actual official declaration of war has been made?".

From what I understand, there are indeed official rules of engagement for war under the Geneva Convention. This includes the treatment of captured enemy combatants. Combatants must wear uniforms and bear the markings of their allegiance. If captured wearing such things, they are treated per the Geneva Convention as POWs. If not wearing the uniform, they are not considered POWs and can be treated as spies and dealt with in however the capturers decide, including being shot on the spot.

Unfortunately, shooting them on the spot, (or as Dear Leader prefers to do these days using drone attacks), eliminates the ability to get intel out of them. Killing them does, however, reduce the burden of putting them in detention camps like Gitmo.

Have the terrorists been following the Geneva Convention?

Guantanamo has been used by the US for the US since the early 1900's. We've basically rented it for all these years, long before AlQaida or ISIS. Why should we just stop now? It's set in a good area for a practical naval use. What's different?

As for bringing the detainees here, why? What good will that do?
