I have a $20 coffee pot, I've only used tap water. Tastes like coffee. I like my coffee like ETB's sister likes her men.

To answer the original question, tap water (city) heated in a tea kettle or microwaved when in a hurry and a French Press. Beans ground fresh for every batch. The grinder is the only 'appliance' that we leave sitting out. I bought a handsome Cuisinart model that looks nice sitting in the corner.
