First of all, lol at Obama for "crying" about dead children while announcing executive actions that wouldn't have prevented one tragedy.

This is what I'm gathering he did. Please let me know if I missed anything.

- modified the definition of what constitutes a gun dealer
- asked for states to participate in sharing data
- create more positions to investigate background checks
- promised money for mental health research
- promised money for smart gun research

I don't really have an issue with any of that.

I'm not sure he really has the authority to define what a gun dealer is. I know people online who are gun dealers that aren't licensed and I'm not sure I have an issue with them being forced (maybe scared is a better word) to be licensed.

Without states (and medical) participating in data sharing, the background checks were basically a joke. Instead of expanding checks I'm happy they are focusing on correcting the shitty checks they already had.

It's about time they investigate background checks. I think they have 3 days to respond now. IMO if they can't respond in time that's on the executive branch.

Does Obama have money to promise for anything or does Congress have to provide a budget for him?

I'm really curious to see if they can come up with dependable smart guns and if the military will use them. They should test them with the secret service first. Perhaps they can use them the next time they want to arm the cartels.

Smart guns are stupid. Also, Obama straight up lied that you can buy a gun online and not have a background check, and the idiotic White House tweeted it. He borderline called people in the nra anti American and anti children. Him crying and parading that pastor's wife around was a total joke as well.

No mention that there are more guns and that the murder rate has been declining (don't care about the suicide numbers).

The only fucking reason people are talking about his actions to strengthen gun laws is because of his cry tactics yesterday. He knew thats what he had to do to get the attention of Americans.

He screamed "tighten gun laws!!" A hundred a times over the last few years. People were kind of like yeaahhhhh I guess..? Then they went on to the next subject (like SJW's do). So he needed a new plan. Crying was that plan. And it worked to get the people's attention.

Obama is a scumbag but he's smart.

Incidentally, the number of people in that room whose family members would have been helped by the president's actions would be zero.

On this topic, that's simply not true. What his predecessor can say is that there are laws and the laws will be enforced. It isn't that complicated. I would love to know why (and why the question is never asked) Mr. Obama wants new gun legislation when he does nothing to enforce existing laws (the duty of the executive branch).

Obama could try to use the US government the way it's meant to be used and make change thru congress, but he rather make this an US vs Them mentality, which he has pretty much done since taking office.

And before you give me the "well the GOP won't allow him to make a change" bs, I would like to know why Obama didn't go thru the proper channels when the dems controlled the house and senate? I was listening to NPR on the way into work today and they interviewed Ohio private sellers who routinely find buyers through Armslist.com - which is not a gun seller but a "free speech forum" for people looking to buy and sell firearms - and they all seemed to think it could make a difference in that the buyers they connect with would be subject to a background check.

Couple that with more FBI agents devoted to checking backgrounds it might move the needle on some of these mass shootings.

For example, Mohammod Abdulazeez, the guy who shot up the Navy recruiting station obtained his firearm(s) through a private seller he contacted on armslist.com and had a history of mental illness and was not subject to a background check for his private purchase.

However, it won't even come close to solving the major problems like suicides, accidental discharge deaths, gang violence, etc. Personally I think Obama should offer up a bill with something like a 3/4 requirement for any future attempt at gun bans in exchange for movement on those things. It will be interesting to see if the courts uphold their interpretations.

I am one who is not opposed to background checks as it relates to firearms purchases but "could" and "might" isn't good enough to use as a reason to go against the wishes of the American people when we aren't fully enforcing the laws currently in place.

In addition, to couple the recent mass shooting events with such a Presidential edict is just false advertising. An exception can certainly be found but the way it's presented is what's creating such a defensive wall to me.
