Anyone have a smart watch?

My wife has an apple one and she bought me a gear s2 today. It's actually pretty cool. Long term I'm not sure what I'll really use it for but so far it's pretty fun.

I got a Moto 360 (2nd Gen) from work. I never liked the idea of smart watches. But now that I wear one, I do enjoy not having to pull my phone out of my pocket every time it goes off. It has gotten to the point now where if I'm wearing one of my regular watches, and my phone goes off, I still check my watch.

Moto has a sport version of the 360 coming out in January that I'll probably wear more often since it's geared more towards activity rather than style. The only downside will be not being able to swap out the bands like I'm used to on the one I have now.

Showing my ignorance here but what all does a "smart watch" do in addition to a normal GPS watch? What features make it smart, I'm asking.

Pairs with your phone so any notifications that come to your phone show up on your watch. Most have microphones built in, so you can reply to texts or emails from your watch and there are apps that have been updated to add some capabilities where you can do things directly from the watch.

Well I'll be damned.

We went to look at Christmas lights tonight so in the 2nd half of the cavs game, I followed on my watch. It updated the score live and I just kept looking at it. Simple but was perfect tonight.

Just picked up the Gear S.
I sit in a lot of useless meetings at work. Its nice to have access to alerts without obviously looking at my phone.
I also use the speakerphone a lot in the car.

Seems like overkill to me, since you must have your phone on your person. Create a watch to take place of a phone, and you're on to something.

Don't believe you need your phone on you with the 3g versions.

To be fair, you don't have to have your phone on you. Several of the Android models will work on WiFi as long as your phone has connected to that WiFi portal in the past. So if you sign on to the network at work every day...and one day you forget your phone but have your watch on you...you would still get notifications to your watch through WiFi instead of Bluetooth.

In all honesty, the marketing message for Smart Watches is to be a supplement to your phone. The market isn't there to replace your phone because nobody wants to have a conversation like you're Dick Tracey while you're out and about. The messaging for these is, get a quick glance at what just came through to your phone and decide whether or not it's worth taking your phone out of your pocket to act on. The purpose of Smart Watches right now, is to lessen the amount of times a day you pull out your phone for needless purposes.

I'm still getting used to mine. My wife loves hers. She puts all of her appointments in it and gets alerts. If a patient has test results coming that day she will tell it to remind her in a couple hours to check for results and it alerts her to check. Also if she has a question on a medication she just tells the watch to look it up. She doesn't have to have her phone on her and says it's been really really helpful for her. So guess it depends how yours using it.

Gear s can be a stand alone.

No interest for me....I don't even have an iPad/tablet
