I'm looking at cutting the cable cord and saving some $$ to buy beer and hookers.
What are your experiences?
We already have Netflix and Amazon Prime. I'll probably get Hulu. Test out Sling. Probably get a chromecast and I have an xbox1. Maybe look into an antennae for live football games.
I can watch most tv shows a few days after they air with Hulu or their own website (i.e. AMC and Nick Jr[Daughter loves Paw Patrol already]). Sling has ESPN and I may be able to just use Watch ESPN with a friend/family member's account info. Subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket/MLB.tv with a student discount (GF is back in school and I'm starting my masters).
What am I not taking into account? What am I not thinking of?

I use sling. I would get the amazon stick over chrome cast. The only issue I have with sling is it is on a slight delay. Normally live sports are about 10-15 seconds behind. The HD Antenna is worth it for other live events though. It's cheap and works very well.

Reasoning for amazon fire stick over chromecast?

To be fair, when I got sling it wasn't available on chromecast. I live in a house that has chromecast (2 of them lol), apple tv, and the amazon fire stick. At the end of the day, they are all pretty much the same shit, especially for what you are trying to do. I like the amazon stick (or amazon fire tv if you want to pay more) because of the remote and it is pretty easy/straight forward to use. I find chromecast to be a pain in the ass to sync sometimes. Look at the bottom of the sling website where it says "get deals." Normally they give you 50% off or in my case a free fire stick with the purchase of 3 months of sling in advance.hasbeen;1768548 wrote:Reasoning for amazon fire stick over chromecast?

SlingTV is the best investment I've ever made. Saving about $100 a month on what I was paying (or about to pay).

the beauty of sling is the ability to dump it whenever you want. i've been dumping it during the summers since the only sports that are on are baseball
that being said, it screws up more often than i'd like. its especially wonky in the 6-7pm range on various channels. tbs specifically.

I have several (nearly a dozen) friends who have all bought Jailbroken fire sticks from Ebay. They all rave about them. So far as I know it functions like a normal fire stick (amazon prime video, netflix, hulu, etc.) but it's all free, no subscription (if you have a subscription i think you can sign in) but the biggest free perks they have talked about are:
1. NFL Sunday ticket
2. Every PPV fight, event, etc.
3. Watching HD movies while they are playing in theaters. I watched the Martian at a guys house like 4 weeks ago, and my wife just went and watched 007 with his wife last weekend.
I think that's the route I would go but I'm skeptical of the legality of this whole thing and I'm pretty sure I'd be the one guy to get busted with the damn thing.

Tell an idiot what Sling is and what it is all about. While I could google it, I prefer a dumbed down version from a real person.Laley23;1768559 wrote:SlingTV is the best investment I've ever made. Saving about $100 a month on what I was paying (or about to pay).

About 25-30 channels, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, TBS, AMC, Food, Discovery, Travel, CNN, Disney (if you have kids).
$25 a month, $20 without the sports package (extra ESPN channels and Bein Sports for soccer fans)
No subscription
Available on iOS (not Apple TV), Windows, Roku, Amazon Fire, XBox(???), Roku Stick and Amazon Fire Stick
No DVR function on most channels, but shows are saved and available on demand for a few weeks (Walking dead seemed to have the last 3 episodes at a time)
Watch ESPN subscription is included with it
HBO is available for the same rate as HBO Standalone, I believe $14.99. Just makes it easier to have it in one spot, though I have HBOgo from elsewhere.
Thats about it. I paid up for Internet. Got AT&Ts gigapower for $70 a month. Haven't had but a few issues (and none seem to have been Internet, i.e. Buffering, issues). My biggest loss was FX, but was able to get FX Now from a friend for giving them my showtime credentials.
I was was paying for cable and Internet, Netflix, sports packages (MLBtv and NBA Gametime), HBO and Showtime. It was well over $200 a month.
I now now pay pay for everything, but have dropped cable charge for Sling. And have helped some friends get work, in exchange for HBO go account and FX Now as well as split the sports packages with a friend in Boston. So, all in all, saving over $100 a month probably.

My only issue will be that we are moving to the country, and our max mbps will probably be 15-20, and that will be shaky. We now have 50 (cable, in town) and I love it.

Sling's service can be really choppy for some sporting events. Love netflix. Amazon prime's selection kind of sucks, but I don't have it for their tv/movie selection anyways.
Count me in as another who cut the cable cord.

As it is always said in the 100 times this thread has been created... my biggest "fear" is for live sporting events.

Get an HD antenna combined with sling and you are pretty much covered.ernest_t_bass;1768694 wrote:As it is always said in the 100 times this thread has been created... my biggest "fear" is for live sporting events.

What is your DL speed, and are you going cat5 into the router, or wireless.Fly4Fun;1768683 wrote:Sling's service can be really choppy for some sporting events. Love netflix. Amazon prime's selection kind of sucks, but I don't have it for their tv/movie selection anyways.

I've had no issues, 260ish DL speed, at my new house without issues. I had lots of issues at my apt with about 70 DL speeds, but they were almost non existent when I went directly
into the router.

We recently moved out into a more rural area and have been stuck with Satelite Internet and the issue is not only speed but data caps10-15gb a month. Then they give you an extra 50gb a month to use between 2am and 7am lol.ernest_t_bass;1768667 wrote:My only issue will be that we are moving to the country, and our max mbps will probably be 15-20, and that will be shaky. Time Warner is honestly serving homes a half mile from my subdivision and advised me I could get their service if I wanted to pay 25k for them to build out that extra half mile. May get It in a year once more homes are built.
It is a first world problem but not having reliable high speed sucks especially since my job allows work from home when kids are sick, bad weather or just whenever you need to.

Currently paying $60 for 35/5. Have the option to upgrade to 50 down. We'll see how it goes. I got 2 chromecasts and an antennae today. Cancelled directv. 2 free months of sling. I'll probably cancel that after the trial. Going to get my parents account info for Watch ESPN.raiderbuck;1768692 wrote:What are you guys paying for internet (unbundled)?
Currently, I'm watching netflix and gf is casting hulu or sling or whatever the fuck she's doing over there.

$70 for about 280mps upload and 242mps download. Just ran a speed test.raiderbuck;1768692 wrote:What are you guys paying for internet (unbundled)?
Advertised as 1gig, but that's only to the "hub" about 50 yards away. Lose some speed for the cat5 run from the hub to router and then some more speed for being wireless versus directly plugged into router.

Bandwidth caps are crap anyway. They'd make sense if it were a finite resource, but it isnt. Just price gougingernest_t_bass;1768893 wrote:10-15gb/month? JFC. What the actual fuck? We have 350 right now with cable internet!
