We know Gilbert was Mike Pettine's guy. I suspect he was also just fine with Shelton/Orchard as he thought he was building a stud defense. Erving I can't say for certain, but given that he thought this team would win with running and defense (and we are the worst in the league at both) I bet he was even fine with that pick.
The talent is horrible, but I would bet the only pick he was really against was probably Manziel.

Agreed. I guess we'll know who may have been more at fault when the axe drops. If Farmer survives, he may get a pass because he was drafting for need and players Pettine wanted. I know they've drafted for the 3-4 but I hope they go back to the 4-3 unless they get a talent evaluator who really knows the nuances of that scheme. Drafting guys who put their hand in the dirt, at the collegiate level, and projecting them to rush the passer & cover TE's/guys out of the backfield is kind of an art form. I think he's an exceptional pass blocker. I can't recall ever debating that part of his game but I do think he's an athletic/finesse type LT. Not a mauler who you can run behind who is a lock to get you 1-3 yards when you need it.
