With the recent correction in the market, is now the time to buy in? If so, what blue chip companies are you investing in?
I might wait a day and dump some in Amazon.

Definitely. Kinda sucks if you were planning on retiring tomorrow. Not bad if you got 30 more years.

Why Amazon? When they make money, and they lost $241M last year, their margins are complete shit so you are basically banking on what hasn't happened ever and that's people only buying stuff on Amazon. That ship has sailed in my opinion and I think it's more likely an Amazon competitor wipes them out vs. Amazon taking over the retail market. I wouldn't touch their stock with a 10 foot pole.SportsAndLady;1746865 wrote:With the recent correction in the market, is now the time to buy in? If so, what blue chip companies are you investing in?

I don't plan on touching their stock, but it is hard to imagine a competitor wipes them out.sleeper;1746870 wrote:Why Amazon? It always is. I don't think its imminent or anything but Amazon isn't some perfectly run company like everyone thinks it is. It has problems and it has weakness which make it ripe for losing business elsewhere.like_that;1746872 wrote:I don't plan on touching their stock, but it is hard to imagine a competitor wipes them out.

Amazon would just buy out a competitor that comes close to it, or drop prices because they can and the competitor can't. Amazon isn't going anywhere.sleeper;1746870 wrote:Why Amazon? Plus, I'm not buying Amazon for its online sales.
I'm buying because of their storage databases and cloud services. That's where they make their money.

I don't buy individual stocks, but stay diverse in a variety of funds, the mix of which is balanced regularly using modern portfolio theory. We do often, take the buying opportunity offered by a significant downturn, to invest cash that might be available in the account.

... I think a good investment right now would be medical stocks like Actavis.

I said it's more likely that Amazon goes out of business vs. taking over the retail market. Not sure why you can't understand simple English.SportsAndLady;1746916 wrote:Let me know when Amazon starts their demise. I'll be waiting around for it.
Amazon is an okay company but its got a lot of problems. It's not a good investment in my opinion, but again I work in Finance and advise companies so what the hell do I know. Go blow your money on a company with increasing revenues with a net income that can't follow.

I'm not arguing Amazon is the greatest investment to make. I'm going to buy a few shares in the next few days. Why? Because in times of volatility and buy-low opportunities, I look at blue chip stocks to make a few short-term bucks. Are there better options? Absolutely. But for now I'll invest in a company that I know will rebound. I wait for these types of corrections to buy large cap equities. Amazon is my choice this time.sleeper;1746920 wrote:I said it's more likely that Amazon goes out of business vs. taking over the retail market. Not sure why you can't understand simple English.

Okay. But that is gambling not investing. Short term gain can just as easily be a short term loss.SportsAndLady;1746921 wrote:I'm not arguing Amazon is the greatest investment to make. In a broad market sell-off, picking individual names really doesn't help. More likely, it will hurt as you buy well-known names or companies you think will do well - and those often have not sold off as much and in some cases may be arbitrarily propped-up a little with people moving to "safe" stocks.
Just buy the S&P and Nasdaq ETF's. I think now is a great time to pump some money in - you may not be hitting the bottom, but if you wait you might miss a nice bounce back.
We have been long past due for a correction. Returns might not be so great the next few years, but with many stocks technically in a "bear" correction (down 20%+) you won't see a much better entry point.
Don't quote me, but off the top of my head over the past 30+ years such buying opportunities have only presented in maybe '82, '87, '01 and '08....probably would see an average 3-yr return after those periods close to 50%.
However, you still should not commit cash you may need in 12-18 months. Even an extra 20% on $20k is only $4k, but you could end-up losing if you need to sell inside 12 months. Closer to 12 months I'd say your risk is @ 1% (transaction/mgmt fees), less than 6 months I'd say you could lose as much as 10%.

People still buy individual stocks? I thought ETF was the way to go? Did One of your roommates plop $500 big ones on a hot stock?

I'm in the same boat. My one regret is I just dumped about 20k in an ETF that's tied to the Nasdaq and if I would have waited until yesterday to go in it'd be making a killing. As it is I bought 3 weeks ago and am down big time.
My one piece of advice is don't buy oil stocks. We haven't seen the bottom yet it will be down in the 20's later this quarter. That's when you should buy and buy big. Unless you have less than 5 yrs to retire.
