Titans Chris Johnson to race Usain Bolt

Bullet Bob Hayes was never officially timed in the 40, but estimates (which is obviously pretty worthless) are 4.2 or sub-4.2. He was, at one time, a WR holder in the 60yd dash and 100M - 45 years ago and 4 tenths of a second slower than Bolt.

Rod Woodson was an accomplished track star in college and was an All-American in the 110M hurdles (invited to the olympic trials but opted for the NFL). He ran a 4.31 at the combine. In 1987, Woodson recorded 13.29 in the 110M hurdles, the 4th best time in the world that year, and this for a guy who did train, but not at the professional level. Sure, Johnson is faster than Woodson, but not as experienced and the 110M hurdles aren't exactly a pure sprint nor the fastest in the business.

The ONLY chance is if Bolt toys with him enough to open the door for Johnson.

Would they race on grass or on a track? I say they race at a beach. Neither guy gets an advantage.

When he's reacting to the gun and he's running a 100 meter race, I'd say that's pretty fair. Like I said, if they announce this to be a 40 yard dash then Bolt absolutely will not run the race the same way he would run a 100.

Johnson doesn't have much of a chance is what I'm saying.

I don't think guys can run the first 40 any differently - the 100M is, after all, a sprint. Top speed does tend to occur over 50-70M with the 80-100M splits being usually a few hundredths slower each.

So there isn't much Bolt could add "running differently" over 40M, MAYBE he could squeeze out a few hundredths.

If you extrapolate Bolts 40M from either record run, removing the reaction time, he'd run about a 4.15 40. Also, consider some of the guys were gaming the combine electronic timing system by actually starting with a little forward momentum.

LOL, he would definitely run it differently. And what do you mean he could MAYBE squeeze out a few hundredths. .03-.04, I'd say that's a few right? There is a big difference between a 4.2 and a 4.16. Hundredths are a lot when you're moving that fast.

I would pay to see Bolt race Ted Ginn Jr. goal line to goal line on a football field with a ball in their hands.

Ok, then put them on a track--only fair right? I'd still put my money on Bolt on the field.

Had this question been asked right after the Olympics, no one would question it. Why is everyone all of a sudden questioning Usain Bolt? He's the fastest man on the planet--if you honestly believe that anyone in the NFL is faster than he is then I don't know what to tell you...

Bolt would humiliate Ginn or any NFL player on a track. I would like to see it on a football field because Ginn is the fastest guy I have ever seen on a football field.

This...

These guys are all fast but we're talking about comparing them to the fastest man who has ever lived. About a man who beats the rest of the fastest men on the planet by 7-8 meters in the 100.

Ginn vs. Johnson is the race everyone should want.

How is anyone sure of what bolt runs? Hes never ran a 40 like at the combine, all you ahve to work with is his "splits" which are on a track with a starting block and spikes

Bolt is a slow starter...Bolt is a slow starter

Tell that to the other competitors who have all run under 10 seconds

MAYBE because it's a fact they don't hit top speed until 50-60M. What you are implying is that they are capable of hitting top speed faster but don't because of endurance. Bolt himself has said the key for him is the first 50M. He doesn't hold anything back like you're implying.

On Bolt's two record runs, his last 3 20M segments were all faster then either of his first two. On the 9.69, his last 10M split, when he clearly slowed to showboat, was only 3 one hundredths slower than his 30-40M split. So even were you to try to make an endurance argument, Bolt has shown he can maintain a top speed faster than what he can hit in 40M. In other words, he'd accelerate faster if he could because there's clearly potential to maintain that top speed a little earlier.

Also, your argument implies other guys who can't maintain top speed as long would for some reason "be slower" to accelerate because of endurance concerns and this is not true (Ben Johnson had a 40M times 2 one hundredths slower and Mo Green equaled Bolt's). In fact, Bolt's 9.58 was only .01 faster over the first 40 (excluding reaction time) vs. his 9.69 olympic record. Bolt has more endurance or "reserve", so his 40M time would be faster than them if he had the acceleration.
