Just so I can say "told ya so"...I think American Pharoah breaks the triple crown drought...didn't think it after the Derby, until I thought about it more and realized that WAS a pretty impressive run. Preakness was impressive, for the rain....feel like we haven't seen this horse really run his race yet.

For the record, I didn't think the last few horses would do it. Although California Chrome was probably a much better horse than I gave credit for, seeing as it lost the Breeder's Cup by just a length.

And if the racing gods decide he isn't worthy, then you all can laugh at me here.

It would be good for horse racing to finally have another x3 crown winner.

Ehhh, I don't think it's going to make more people go to the track. I feel like the drought is actually better for horse racing, at least the Preakness and Belmont viewership for people hoping to see history.

LOL, they just played the clip of California Chrome's owner crying last year about fresh horses in the Belmont. The sour grapes will sting even more if American Pharoah gets it done in the very next year.

I'm not sure picking the heavy favorite that already won the first 2 legs qualifies as an "I told you so" situation.

It's been like 37 years and the last 13 have failed...so the betting spread grossly overstates the true odds. Picking against the heavy favorite CC last year was actually much less of a "I told ya so".

Fastest Belmont time in 20+ years (oops, 14 years)...that's the kind of horse it takes to win the Triple Crown.

No idea if California Chrome will run in the Breeder's Cup, but would love to see that...along with its owner who said he wouldn't see a TC winner in his lifetime.

Yeah, Secretariat is the only horse to go below 2:26....at 2:26.65 I'd say that's a really, really solid time....5th or 6th fastest in the 89 years since lengthening the race.

I know, just offering some perspective (along with how incredible Secretariat was - the unofficial record in all 3 races).

Time will tell where this horse really ranks all time, and I'm sure it will be discussed plenty in the coming months. But it's a pretty impressive list of accomplishments (one of the reasons I was down on CC last year was because I wasn't impressed):
1) first horse to win the Derby from the auxiliary gates...not a good time, but took a very long trip.
2) won impressively in the rain and mud at the Preakness
3) second horse in last 30 years to lead the Belmont wire to wire...and the 5th/6th fastest Belmont Stakes on record (7-8 around the same time, and then there's Secretariat).
4) faced the most horses of any Derby winner in nearly 70 years.

If you're going to rename the horse after a Tiger baseball player, it should be Verlander for the way the team has ridden the big horse into the ground. ;)

That was the coolest moment of my life. Just worked a Triple Crown and got to be a part of history. Got the NBC Format and Belmont Book as well as a AP betting slip I will probably frame soon.

Maybe next year work on getting rid of Costas.

Was it just crazy there after? You didn't hang around long, did you?

Gotcha. That makes more sense. I thought you were just that stoked to see a triple crown win and I would have felt bad if seeing that was the pinnacle of your life so far. I rescind my original douche-baggy post.

I'd like some scientist to compare the surfaces for Secretariat and American Pharoah in their x3 crown victories. The current Belmont track is quite deep sand which really slows a horse down and the Preakness was a muddy mess a few weeks ago.

secretariat at Belmont=

American Pharoah=

imo= clearly todays track is deeper sand, which makes the surface much slower.

...and the Pharoahs competition was dismal compared to Secreteriats. Weak fields in all 3 legs this year but it's still a 3 topper soooo party on Bob and your bunch of douche bag hangers oners.

You're wrong, shut up Tiernan. Plus Secretariat would never have passed the drug tests currently done on horses,

Costas rewrote some of his script right before air and after rehearsal. Our producer was about to murder him. He made it about himself. I can't stand working on shows with him...but, he wins the Emmys!

And it was nuts. I was in the main truck with director/producer and graphics. We were told not to make a sound during the race, as my coworker and I do the running order and the track map during it, but once we get taken out for the final stretch, everyone was getting pretty excited as it was obvious he was gonna win. When we finally went to commercial, everyone was high-fiving and clapping.

But yeah, since it was last race, we had to pack up all our equipment out of the trucks to ship back to the office. Didn't get out until around 11. I did get my picture with the Triple Crown trophy.

Only one mistake when the horses were out of order during post parade, hopefully we still have a shot at an Emmy next year.

No worries.

And for the record, by no means the best moment of my life. Just reflecting back probably the coolest. A lot of hard work since I decided what I wanted to do in life in HS, and to work a Triple Crown (winning) race with probably 20+M viewers at age 28 had me feeling pretty pumped last night.

Also so helped that I didn't fuck up, so I didn't get my head chopped off lol.
