In general, breaking down today's athletes with intentions of building them up and making them stronger does not work as it used to.
I've never agreed with the "temper-tantrum", "throw-a-chair", "cussing and jacking students up" mentality. It may have worked for some but not most. When I first moved to Orrville and my two oldest sons played football in the 7th and 8th grades, there had to be at least 40 - 50 students on each team. In all reality, they had enough players/athletes to try to possibly have offense only and defense only teams with a few going both ways. But they never did that. They usually had the same 11-15 starting and playing offense and defense and most of those players were naturally talented/gifted athletes. They used to win by huge margins also, and the rest didn't get much playing time.
In my opinion, from the practices I did see, they had their favorites and really didn't spend much time in practice trying to find or develop anyone else. Most of the coaches now are the same coaches and/or are some of those former players coaching in the same manner as they were coached. Now the talented/gifted/athleticism pool has diminished and it's time to see what kind of coaching "skills" they really have!
We're told that in the past, Orrville had some great coaching to go along with the great talent and athletes. Or, was it great athletes that made the coaching look great??? During conversations and days of recollection with some of the athletes under Coach Tipton, they've stated that they didn't spend a lot of time in the weight room either, they simply got by on talent, athleticism, love of the game and playing in the park, i.e., "Park Ball"!
By some on this thread, we've been told that Coach Davault was among those great coaches too and would always have his team ready! Hmmmm!
A great coach should be able to motivate his
team to work hard on and off season and get rid of any "cancerous" members that refuse to participate.
Perhaps then he can get back to the "old" days, run with 11-15 players going both ways! How great would that be?!
