Figured I'd start a thread for all the Duke fans out there that will be visible and rooting hard for their football team come this fall. Kinda surprised we don't have a Duke football thread considering the basketball season thread was nearly 1,200 posts so I expect this thread to meet or exceed that.

Looking like another season of going to a mediocre bowl game at best and losing to an opponent that is compromised of a bunch of dudes that couldn't make it elsewhere. Anyone think Duke is going to win more than 6 games this year? Time will tell.

Not a Duke fan so I won't speak for them, but as a fan of a similar basketball/football situation school, I can say there are generally a decent amount of dedicated football fans. It just doesn't have nearly the audience or relevance to speak about it.

Be honest, would you say there is a similar proportion of OSU football fans compared to OSU basketball fans? I've lived in Lexington for years, and grew up and now live in Columbus. I'd say that the UK basketball/OSU football and UK football/OSU basketball fans are pretty much a parallel to each other. Just a different preference in sport, which just happens to be the dominant one for that school.

It doesn't make the UK football or OSU basketball fans any lesser of fans just because not as many in the general public claims fanhood.

Not sure about overall, but I know a LOT of "die hard" OSU football fans around my age who conveniently root for a bball power. UNC, Duke, Kansas, UK, etc.

I took pride in rooting for OSU hoops when they sucked and pulling for Jimmy Jackson as a young kid. Later on it was Scoonie and Mike Redd, while a lot of my friends slurped Vince Carter and UNC. Fuck that.

Bandwagon fans at their finest. Prob live in Pennsylvania/near PA and root for the steelers too. Bunch of losers.

That's not what I mean.

I meant, there is a parallel between the number of claimed UK basketball fans and OSU football fans (I'd say like 90% in each local and surrounding area). Basically, everyone in and around Lexington/Columbus and in the state, for the most part, are fans of the big school and their main sport.

There is a similar parallel between UK football fans and OSU basketball fans. Not that they root for other teams, it's just they don't care nearly as much about the other sports.

Your initial point was a dig at Duke basketball fans that don't give a shit about football. And my point was that percentage-wise, it's not that different at any other school that has a dominant sport.

I'm a fan of Ohio State. I don't care what the sport is, I'm a fan of Ohio State. If they win a NC in fencing, great for the school! I didn't watch one single wrestling match this year, nor will I next year, but I think it's pretty fucking sweet that tOSU won the NC.

AZU this initial point is that Duke, a small private school in bumfuck nowhere has a national fan base compromised almost entirely of Bandwagon fans. They deserve no respect or props that "their team" has any success. They are trash and I love hearing their stories about how they became fans or how they have a connection to the school. Just admit you picked them as a team because they are good and we can move on.

It is possible to follow a team you like, support them and not be a "fan". Not everyone is classified as the highest level of being a fan.

Entirely different. These are people who root for Duke in basketball but USC in football for example. Well USC of a few years ago I'm sure they've found a new team like Oregon or Ohio State since then.

Quite the opposite. Without those people who follow the team that aren't "fans" the total amount watching this form of entertainment would be significantly smaller.

I understand that. They are entertained by each respectively.

This is not what the thread is about. For example, I had no dog in the fight for the championship game but was rooting for Wisconsin so we could have a legitimate title winner this year rather than a team of One-and-Dones who get every call win it. If Wisconsin would have won, you would not see me trying to claim myself as a long term passionate fan wearing a Badgers shirt the next day. And come fall, I will be rooting against Wisconsin with every bone in my body.

A 1st grader could figure this out. I'm not going to just randomly pick Buffalo and start rooting for them...

Yes but being a bandwagon fan has a strong negative connotation and everyone wants to avoid that label. Sorry, but if you root for Duke the odds of you being a bandwagon fan and a piece of shit are close to 1 than they are to .99.

Bandwagoning one sport and being a fan of that school in everything are different things. I've been a UK fan since I was a kid, and support them in everything. While I agree, most Duke fans don't have any connection to Duke, if someone became a Duke fan when they were 5-years old and are still a Duke fan in their 30's, who cares?
