Wasn't even really my dog until the last year. He was my wife's family dog when she was in college and afterward, but had diabetes and her family didn't want to pay the bills to try to help him get better, so that fell on us over the last year. Never really was that attached to him, but it is sad to know that he's not going to be at the door wagging his tail when I get home. Recently, he had stopped eating and was vomiting, and his belly was filling with fluid (according to the vet), so this was certainly the right time. It still kind of sucks, though, and I didn't even like him that much lol.

Sorry man, just had to put our 12yr old lab down this past fall. One of the hardest days of my life, I stayed in the office with her while they gave her the shot. That was pretty intense.

If someone is not a "dog person", they may not understand how hard it is to say goodbye to a little buddy. The dog we had prior to our current one had to be put down in 2007 and it totally leveled me. I don't equate dogs to humans, but I was much more upset about it than I expected to be. I just love those little guys.

Never a good day when you have to make that call..and the drive to the vets.
We have a 12 year old Golden now everyday, I wonder if when I get up in the morning he will still be with us.
9 dogs that the wife and I have had during our marrage we had to make that call and the trip to the vets 4 times
Sorry man ..

Probably one of the worst things to have to do. I've had to do it twice. Not gonna lie...I cried like a girl both times.

Yeah, the vet was explaining how things go down typically. Seemed pretty intense as the body does a lot of weird things after death, so we decided it would be best not to be there. Had to be strong for my wife, but definitely got me a little teary eyed thinking about how protective he was of our 6 month old son.

...it's very hard to put into words how and why you become so attached to pets but you just do. I've had great dogs & cats and when you have to make that decision to put them down, at least for me it was one of the saddest days of my life. I think it's because of the un-conditional love they have for you and appreciation they have for what they give to their owners that make that bond special. I'm not sure if I'll ever have another, but who knows.

Damn, sorry man. One of the worst feelings is losing a family pet.

Agreed. I've held a cat and a dog in in my arms while they gave the injection. Intense is definitely the correct word, but I felt I owed it to them.

Very sorry to hear of your loss, Dr. KnOiTaLL.
