Michael Sam may be a genius. He probably knew he couldn't hack it in the NFL...or he didn't even want to try. Knowing this, instead of keeping his head down, he makes a bit of a spectacle of himself and parlays his 15 minutes of fame into a lifetime of appearance fees and DWTS appearances. He'll probably end up having a talk show on Oprah's network somebody.

Maybe he will be the next Bachelor? That would be a ratings grabber!

That is exactly why he said something. If he was any good, he would have kept his mouth shut to get a bigger paycheck. Once he realized that he wasn't going to amount to anything, he made his sexual orientation the front page news story and kept him relevant.

The hero of the gays is a guy who exploited his sexuality for profit; a true hero.

Well, then he's already gotten a few picks from "20 cocks for the choosing" made for him. Win-win!

I thought that everyone knew that running back with the Redskins and Green Bay in the late 60's was gay, that Lombardi had a gay brother and therefore he let everyone know that and he was not harassed.

Joey Lawrence was on the show, and he was a supporting cast member of a shitty 90s sitcom that ran for like 2/3 yrs. Michael Sam is as famous as he ever was, and least he had talent. Grow up.

I honestly don't give a shit if he is considered the first gay player or not. I support gay marriage, and all that of that, but I think I am going to take Sleeper's side on this. Maybe not as extreme as sleeper, but did he really need to make a national announcement about it??? Wouldn't it have been so much better if he was openly gay without making an announcement. Perhaps if he got drafted he would have still kissed his BF on live television, and when reporters ask him about it, his response would have been "yeah, I'm gay."

I hope the next openly gay athlete takes that approach instead of making a spectacle out of it. It would send a message that being gay is not that big of a deal, which is ultimately what gay activists want.

Agreed with this. From my understanding this is what he wanted to do, but BSPN was going to announce that he was gay, and he wanted to do it on his terms. Hence the announcement. I fault BSPN for even giving a fuck, bc fuck BSPN. He was openly gay in college, and it wasn't a big deal at all. It was at the combine with background checks when it became a thing. He certaintly doesn't seem to be down playing the "FIRST OPENLY GAY ATHLETE ZOMG" thing though.

I don't think anyone GAF about Michael Sam being gay. We established that a long time ago. This is just DWTS marketing him as "First openly gay NFL player" because "first openly gay man to be drafted and play in the NFL preseason" doesn't sound as enticing.

But he certainly did play it up during the draft when he made out with his boyfriend and smeared cake all over themselves on the air, most likely with the probing of Oprah's crew that was also there. He def played into the whole thing.

Even then, he could have let ESPN run with it, and if they asked him he could have just say he is gay. OR even better he says it is not true, and then ESPN looks really bad.

Do you really think that ESPN would have come out and said he was gay or believed he was?
I am not so sure it even gets reported.

Can the media stop pretending he was actually good now? And didn't make the team cuz he's gay? Any real scout woulda told you he was borderline draftable.
