This is petty but I'm curious. No pun intended.

Dancing on the stars defines him as 1st Gay NFL Player.

Is this an accurate description?

Playing in zero regular season games and being on a practice squad is the NFL?

I just feel like if someone told me they played in the NFL and weren't ever on an active roster I would say, "Well sorta"

What say you?

Kordell Stewart is first I knew about. I know there are rumors about Jeff Garcia as well.

I love when Jeff Garcia comes up in conversation. I always hope someone defends him with a nice picture of his Northern Ohio Wife.

Decent question. I guess if a guy was drafted, played in preseason games and on the practice squad for a time he is in the NFL. A few local kids were drafted and played in the preseason, one is going on his second season of being on a practice squad (matter of fact, just had a beer with him two weeks ago) and could make the roster as a backup this year. Def is still an honor to even be on a practice squad as it is not easy work. I know this kid studies lots and lots of film and is just one injury away from being the backup so he tries to stay ready.

To say though that this sam guy is the first openly gay nfl player.......technically right I guess but yeah, without playing in a real game it is a step down from what most people would think when you say "former NFL player"

The question isnt about him being the gay player....it is about would you consider a person who was on just the practice squad a former NFL player, correct?

Yes, I'm curious if he is an NFL player not curious about his gayness.

In my opinion, if he was drafted by an NFL team, practiced with them and was either on a main roster or a developmental one, he technically was an NFL player. Only marginally and via technicality, but still one, if only because an NFL team has the rights to him if they choose to utilize them. Kind of like how a person can be on a MLB team's 40-man roster but never actually play in the bigs for that team. Or how a walk-on who never actually sees the field in college is part of a football team.

He's obviously not the first player. Would probably be the 1st openly gay player in the nfl technically. But when another gay guy comes out and actually plays, will he be the first openly gay player to play a down in the nfl?

I think he does not qualify as the first openly gay NFL player.

Has to play one game. (NFL regular season)

He sucks. He was charity drafted because of his sexual orientation by a local team for publicity reasons. Call him what you want, but he's a garbage "NFL" player.

And now he is a charity celebrity on DWTS solely because he's gay.

It depends on your definition of "playing in the NFL." IMO, by being drafted and playing in the presason, I'm fine with the label of 1st Gay NFL player. Others think he should play in an actual regular season game. Regardless, DTWS thinks the former opinion works better for them.

They use the word "Star" pretty loosely for that show.

"Dancing With People Who Are Fairly Well Known" doesn't have the same ring to it.

I wouldn't call that playing a down. Pre-season is garbage and a ton of people get cut who were never going to make the team. They need bodies, and it woulda looked bad to cut him earlier. My cousin is a draft analyst by profession, and didn't think he should have even been drafted. An UDFA brought in to camp for sure, but could have easily seen him not make it anywhere.

I would have to clarify him as an NFL player. I consider anyone who makes a roster, practice squad/developmental roster a former NFL Player.

Poor gay people; getting benefits because they are special. They just want to be treated like everyone else.
