The way "Daughter" is put together, both musically and lyrically, stops me every time. If I come across "Daughter" on my iPod, I usually repeat it more than twice.salto wrote: Alive--Pearl Jam

Prefer the Rufus Wainwright version, but yep. Written by Leonard Cohen, btw.Tinkertrain wrote: Stunned that Hallujah by Jeff Buckley hasnt been mentioned yet
Instrumental- Your Hand In Mine- Explosions In The Sky
ALso- U2 Where the Streets Have No Name. Heard it a million times and then saw it set to a video of Dick and Rick Hoyt (Dad who marathons/trathlons with his paralyzed, now 40-year-old son in a wheelchair) and it totally changed my opinion of the song.

I agree.Gobuckeyes1 wrote: Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
Having a child makes this song even more powerful. I can't even imagine what it would be like to lose my daughter the way that Clapton lost his son.
Also like Forever Young by Rod Stewart.
Someone listed Man In The Mirror. Also a good choice.

Amazing Grace
Amazing grace
How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost
But now i'm found
Was blind but now i see
'twas grace that taught
My heart to fear
And grace that fear relieved
How precious did
That grace appear
The hour i first believed
Through many dangers
Toils and snares
I have already come
'twas grace that brought me
Safely thus far
And grace will lead me home
And when this heart
And flesh shall fail
And mortal life shall cease
I shall possess
Within the vail
A life of joy and peace

I got to admit, every time I hear Cats in the cradle, I usually have to change the station. I can't make it through that song.

Round Here - Counting Crows. Particulary this line:
Round here we're carving out our names
Round here we all look the same
Round here we talk just like lions
But we sacrifice like lambs
Round here she's slipping through my hands
Round here we're carving out our names
Round here we all look the same
Round here we talk just like lions
But we sacrifice like lambs
Round here she's slipping through my hands

Piecemeal - "my thoughts concerning man"
http://searchservice.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=sitesearch.results&type=Music&qry=my%20thoughts%20concerning%20man&musictype=1
"focusing my ire
my aberration
for the soul purpose.
the sole purpose of change.
for the benefit of mankind.
a sacrifice must be made by all.
to bring forth righteousness and honor to a dying world.
to truly cleanse the world with my own blood if called for
to lay down my file for the benefit of those i love.
as the blind lead the blind i walk my own path.
through abstinence and compassion that path is clear.
my thoughts, concerning man, have been, of contempt alone.
if i can not uphold my own ideals and standards, then any words mean nothing.
for my children,
for a generation unseen,
i want to offer more, than the pain of a hopeless world.
I accept this burden,
and I will be a living example"

Piecemeal - "proclamation"
http://www.myspace.com/xpiecemealx
"life is a cycle,
a path of becoming,
I will not deviate from a living ascension.
I will not be part of the senseless hatred and violence,
and i can bear witness to no more
this is my proclamation
this is my proclamation
this is my proclamation
this is my proclamation
this is my proclamation
this is my proclamation
this is my proclamation
and i am not a victim,
my path has not been chosen.
I vow to make a difference,
this is my obligation.
no one has the right
to destroy or victimize.
hate and intolerance can only bring demise.
mankind must strive for coexistence.
we are born unjaded with open futures.
I must purge myself of my fathers sins.
all out war on hatred and intolerance, no more.
this is my proclamation.
this is my proclamation
this is my proclamation
this is my proclamation
unity is the power of truth, it resolves all conflict.
false illusions of duality must be realized.
the ability to change and learn is essential to growth.
an unbending branch will crack under force, and so will we all.
mankind must strive for coexistence.
we are born unjaded with open futures.
I must purge myself of my fathers sins.
all out war on hatred and intolerance, no more
no more
set yourself free from the chains that bind you.
open your eyes before its too late.
my instincts true, the goal is set.
my will gains strength with every breath."

I know it isn't powerful in the "motivational sense" that alot of these songs are, but I am going to add "Nutshell" by Alice in Chains. When you know in the end what happens to Layne Staley, you just have this sense that he knows it in advance.

"Come, Thou Fount"
O to grace how great a debtor
daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here's my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.
O to grace how great a debtor
daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here's my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.

Subdivisons by Rush
Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown
Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone
[Chorus:]
(Subdivisions)
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
(Subdivisions)
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help to smooth the unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth
Drawn like moths we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night
Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight
Somewhere out of a memory of lighted streets on quiet nights...
[Chorus]
Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown
Growing up it all seems so one-sided

Closer to the Heart by Rush
And the men who hold high places
Must be the ones who start
To mold a new reality
Closer to the heart, closer to the heart
The blacksmith and the artist
Reflect it in their art
They forge their creativity
Closer to the heart, yes closer to the heart
Philosophers and ploughmen
Each must know his part
To sow a new mentality
Closer to the heart, well closer to the heart
You can be the captain
And I will draw the chart
Sailing into destiny
Closer to the heart, yes closer to the heart
I said closer to the heart, yeah closer to the heart
Closer to your heart, I said closer to your heart
And the men who hold high places
Must be the ones who start
To mold a new reality
Closer to the heart, closer to the heart
The blacksmith and the artist
Reflect it in their art
They forge their creativity

Youth of the Nation by P.O.D (I was a kid when this came out and they released it after Columbine)
Last day of the rest of my life
I wish I would've known
Cause I didn't kiss my mama goodbye
I didn't tell her that I loved her and how much I care
Or thank my pops for all the talks
And all the wisdom he shared
Unaware, I just did what I always do
Everyday, the same routine
Before I skate off to school
But who knew that this day wasn't like the rest
Instead of taking a test
I took two to the chest
Call me blind, but I didn't see it coming
Everybody was running
But I couldn't hear nothing
Except gun blasts, it happened so fast
I don't really know this kid
Even though I sit by him in class
Maybe this kid was reaching out for love
Or maybe for a moment
He forgot who he was
Or maybe this kid just wanted to be hugged
Whatever it was
I know it's because
[chorus:]
We are, We are, the youth of the nation
Little Suzy, she was only twelve
She was given the world
With every chance to excel
Hang with the boys and hear the stories they tell
She might act kind of proud
But no respect for herself
She finds love in all the wrong places
The same situations
Just different faces
Changed up her pace since her daddy left her
Too bad he never told her
She deserved much better
Johnny boy always played the fool
He broke all the rules
So you would think he was cool
He was never really one of the guys
No matter how hard he tried
Often thought of suicide
It's kind of hard when you ain't got no friends
He put his life to an end
They might remember him then
You cross the line and there's no turning back
Told the world how he felt
With the sound of a gat
[chorus]
Who's to blame for the lives that tragedies claim
No matter what you say
It don't take away the pain
That I feel inside, I'm tired of all the lies
Don't nobody know why
It's the blind leading the blind
I guess that's the way the story goes
Will it ever make sense
Somebody's got to know
There's got to be more to life than this
There's got to be more to everything
I thought exists
Last day of the rest of my life
I wish I would've known
Cause I didn't kiss my mama goodbye
I didn't tell her that I loved her and how much I care
Or thank my pops for all the talks
And all the wisdom he shared
