I've seen this happen on Cops a bunch. There was one dude in New Jersey that they did a whole episode following. He was assigned to a housing project that was known for drug activity. Every time he saw a car with white people in it that was in or around the projects, he'd pull them over. He almost always found drugs on them. The profiling does go both ways.

Bad example only because Cops is a very staged show.

But I agree with the concept.

Cops and Alaska State troopers, and I think the campus police show...etc... There are times I feel sorry for the people getting 'busted' because it seems like the cops bait and provoke them. Of course, they only show the ones that end up having some sort of drugs or warrants out but you have to wonder how many times they do this to innocent people.
Kinda happened to my wife a week or two ago. 3 cops surrounded her coming out of a McDonalds. He came to the car, asked (and was very accusatory) if she had been drinking or under the influence, asked if she would take a sobriety test and if they could search her vehicle. Very accusatory and that she was guilty. Turns out someone who has a similar truck was involved in a hit and run that morning about 15-20 miles away. It was obvious the truck had absolutely no damage to it. She obliged, and when they checked out the truck and noticed it had no damage, and she didnt smell of alcohol or show symptons, she was free to go.
Yeah, they had the right to pull her over since it was a same color truck, but to come up on her and act like an absolute asshole, accusing her of a number of things...you have to wonder how many times that escalates if the person (even if innocent) acted like a dick in return and we all know those kind.

When Cops came and filmed in Toledo, the producers basically set up shots. Had the routes the guys would run all laid out and safe. No, stuff doesnt always go to plan, but it was pretty damn scripted. Down to the people they were going to arrest etc.

Did they also prep the people getting arrested to say "only a couple" when asked how much they had to drink and also pass out a wifebeater as the standard uniform!!

lol, I dont know about that! But, I know about 50% of the arrests were staged. Not to say, they werent doing illegal stuff resulting in an arrest anyway. But more, "we have you for open container in the street. If you run..."

If you plan to hang around the usual trashy trailer park/projects area that Cops always seems to be filmed at, I don't think you need that much prepping to get any of that stuff to happen!

I was being facetious with the COPS reference. But the point was that profiling exists both ways based on your ethnicity, time of day, and the area that you are in.

When I was much younger I worked in a restaurant and after work we would cruise around the small town. I got pulled over all the time and told to go home.

I remember a buddy getting pulled over because we were looking back at the police car too much! Guess he thought we were up to no good.

i'd say its gotten better. there definitely seems to be times where maybe they needed some more footage and went trolling for prostitutes. but I would say most are legit calls. hell, one of the cops guy was killed in a shooting...oddly enough by the police he was filming.

I heard a story about a white guy walking, lost, in the hood. Cop pulled over and ordered him into the car "unless you want to die tonight".

Back in 1976 my wife and I and another couple rented a 24 foot Camper
We headed to Cap Cod for two weeks, took our time getting there, had a great time and bought all kinds of antiques along the way. We strapped some of them to the roof of the camper, Wooden Ice Chest, Sleigh, Wooden Baby High Chair.
On the way back my friend brother lived in New York so we head to NY we get lost. We are in Harlem around 10:00 at night looking for a way to get to the Verrazano Bridge.
Two Black cops runs up to us asking what the hell… I’m trying to get out to make a phone call, he tells me to get back in the camper, my friend talking to the other cop.
They tell give us directions and tells us not to stop and any stop sign, traffic lights or any people that will flag us down until we are across the bridge..

We got out of Harlem untouch and no shots fired, I think that the fact many have never seen a camper in real life and the fact that it was loaded with a sleigh on top took many by supprise.
In 1976 in NY was the Son of Sam situation was in full search mode.
We got to our friend brother place, we parked across from a police station, taking up two meters...
The cops was good guys we didn't have to pay for the parking but they all wanted tours of the inside. During the day some locals knocked on the door want to know what this was... and if they could come inside.
We stayed for three days in NY and headed home.
