No it's not . It's awesome for him and awesome that the Marlins want to finally pay someone but that is way to much and this team will be terrible since they aren't going to pay anyone else even close to what they are worth after this deal.

He's a rock star and he's cashing in. I get all the negatives that will become of it, but as a Reds fan don't care.

I think we should all care. Even though this will screw the Marlins payroll up it also sets the standard and what agents will be asking for on the top players. We always chuckle when guys sign big deals elsewhere and think it doesnt affect the Reds, but it really does in some way when the reds do get top tier guys they want to keep. Think Votto really gets that much money if a number of guys before him didnt?>

No....I still don't care at all. Every team has terrible contracts (Homer, Votto etc)

If teams don't want to pay they won't. The Marlins brash deemed this acceptable. It doesn't make any other team pay way too much on others, they do it on their own.

Hope he stays healthy all year and hits 52 HR when no one else cracks 40.

No I'm definitely with you. Like I said it's awesome that he is cashing in and it is awesome that the Marlins are finally willing to spend money to keep their best player. Just as a Marlins fan it sucks knowing that they aren't going to spend money to keep the other good players they have. Also I'm definitely with you about next year I hope he comes back with a vengeance and hits like 60 HRs.

I think we knew we weren't going to be able to keep him. Small market clubs can't afford to put those "way beyond dude's prime" years onto a contract. Another 2-year or even a 3-year, yeah. But not a five-year contract.

It will hurt some, though. Hopefully the other two former Yankee catchers on our roster can combine to be something approaching him as far as framing and working with pitchers goes.

POssibly, but that extension was almost 150 million dollars. I honestly felt it was a breath of fresh air for a player to go ahead accept that sort of deal, get himself that security for the rest of his life, and not be all about trying to be the highest paid and break the bank. Who knows, he coulda got injured badly last year, or slumped, and never rebounded? The agents play a pretty serious game with their players. Sometimes it works like Joe Flacco.

Yeah Trout extended thru 2020 at $140 million. He'll still get a 7 year ridiculous contract then I'd bet.

Stanton can opt out after 6 years....LOL ....can't lose deal for him. He's locked in for a third of a billion dollars, but if the Marlins stink ( and with all that money tied up in one player, they will), but he is free to dump them and get even more if he can.

The Stanton deal looks like a nightmare for the Marlins. They appear to be praying he will opt out after that 6th season.

So the Marlins would be on the hook for only $107 million of the deal over the first six seasons, which computes to an average annual value of just $17.83 million per season before Stanton would have the right to exercise the opt-out clause.

If Stanton remains a Marlin, the $218 million he would collect over those final seven seasons would average out to $31.14 million a year. He will have a complete no-trade clause through the life of the contract, a first for the Marlins under the ownership of Jeffrey Loria.

By backloading the deal so heavily they are almost making it impossible for him to opt out and get anything near that on the open market.

The way they structured this, with the full no trade clause, is just baffling.

Wont happen as he has a decent contract and coming off of two tommy john surgeries in the last two seasons, but Ohio boy Cory Luebke plays for the Padres. I know....wont happen, and probably not a good move but for selfish reasons would be cool if he was a red!

Why would it not make sense if he was a .217 hitter? Christ his BA was a point lower than Alex Avila's and I don't think Al has a brain anymore from all the concussions

He had a bad year, which didn't help after having knee surgery and returning in 3 weeks. Prior to that, Bruce had a very consistent 5 years. He's an .800 OPS, top 5 defender in RF. Also, he's still signed to a friendly deal until 2017. So, unless you feel that at age 27, he's on the decline, I don't know what to say.

Am I opposed to trading him? No. Am I opposed to trading him to the Padres? Yes. I want to team to be competitive in 2015 and make a few moves that could facilitate that. Not trade one of their more valuable assets to a team where for the life of me, I can't find anything they have that can make the Reds better in 2015.
